Here I was, standing in front of the building that I'd been dreading for the last three months. I started taking slow, deep breaths, trying to calm myself before I started having an anxiety attack. Looking at me, Kookie put his arm around me and said, "Hyung, are you okay?" with a worried look on his face. I just nodded slowly, "I'm fine, don't worry!" He sighed, turned fully toward me, holding my shoulders tightly, and said, "Wonwoo Hyung! Look at me! Whatever happened last year is not going to repeat itself." He said this with determination in his eyes.
"How do you know?" I asked, again taking a deep breath.
"Because this year I'm here! I'm gonna crush their skulls, pull out their brains, and feed them to the dogs if anyone even tries to touch you!" He said in a serious tone.
I just looked into his eyes for a moment and burst out laughing. Then, I went up on my tippy toes to ruffle his slightly curly hair, saying, "Aww, my baby Kookie has grown so much! You're even ready to protect your hyung now!" I said in a teasing tone.
His eyes grew wide and he huffed out a sigh of disbelief. I saw a slight pout grow on his lips as he said, "You don't believe me?! You just wait and watch!" Turning around, he took my hand in his, pulling me toward the main entrance. I won't lie, having Kookie here actually made me feel a lot better. And I'm sure he wasn’t lying when he said he would crush someone's skull to protect me.
As we entered the hallway, where everyone was busy chatting away and trying to find their way to their classrooms, I said, "The first years should go to the 3rd floor for the welcoming speech." Kookie let go of my hand, turned to me, and said, "Ya, ya, I know. Don’t worry about me, my friends are already waiting." He pointed down the hall, and I squinted my eyes. I saw a few figures waving at him, and one of them was particularly tall, which caught my attention.
"How the hell did you make friends already?" I asked, in disbelief.
He chuckled and said, "Because I'm not you! I'm handsome and so charming that people are dying to be my friend."
I made a gagging motion and shook my head. "No comment." He then bid me goodbye, threatening to call him if anything happened, before turning and joining his friends. The very tall guy swung his arm around his neck and gave him a tight headlock. I just chuckled and made my way through the crowd to my classroom.
As I walked through the hall, I heard people whispering, and I could feel their gaze linger on me. I went to my locker to put my books away when I heard a girl say, "Is he that Wonwoo guy? I'm surprised he's back!" I tried my best to ignore them, but they were just too loud.
"I know, right! I thought he wouldn't show up after what happened last year! I heard that the Sunbaenim (senior) even got expelled due to that incident! I think his name was San or something..." I heard the other girl gasp and say, "You mean Choi San?! The only son of the CEO of SK Enterprise?! How did someone like him get involved with someone like—" She got cut off by a loud voice.
"Maybe if people just shut up and mind their own fucking business, then there won't be anyone getting expelled anymore!"
I turned to look back at the source of the voice, and immediately a smile took over my face. It was Soonyoung, my best friend! He quickly draped his arms around me, giving me a bone-crushing hug while glaring at the two girls, who started to walk away, embarrassed.
"Oh my Wonwooya! I missed you so much!" he said, not letting me go. I struggled for a while but gave up and just hugged him back. When he finally let go, I took a good look at his face and could see he'd put on some weight during the holidays. His chubby cheeks looked extra squishy as he smiled, and his eyes wrinkled almost closed.
I couldn't resist, so I gave his left cheek a hard squeeze and said, "I missed you a lot too, Soonyoungie!" letting go of his now-red cheek.
We both walked to our classroom together. I was grateful he didn’t bring up what happened last year, even though I knew he must have been dying to ask me. When we entered the classroom, everyone fell silent and stared at me. My heart started beating fast again, and I could feel the sweat dripping from my forehead as people started whispering. I quickly wiped away the sweat and pulled a nonchalant face, trying to look normal as if nothing had happened.
"Just ignore them!" Soonyoung said, pushing me forward. I saw someone waving at us from one of the seats. I got closer and saw it was Jun waving at us with the brightest smile. I waved back as we got closer. When we reached the table, he quickly jumped up, giving us both a tight hug.
And that's when the professor entered the room, not giving us any time to catch up.
"Sit here, I guarded seats for you guys," Jun said as he shifted, and we quickly settled down. The professor started talking, and everyone quietened down. Suddenly, I had this weird feeling, a feeling of relief. I took a look at both my friends sitting on either side of me and smiled to myself, thinking... Maybe, just maybe... this year won't be as bad.
