Naira's POV
TWO MONTHS LATER
The memory of Ansh's sudden goodbye still hurt. His quick departure left me with unanswered questions.
Seeking comfort, I sat on my office couch, cradling my fifth cup of coffee. The warmth and aroma calmed my racing thoughts.
My gaze drifted around the room. A cozy corner with a couch and glass table caught my eye. My mom's gift, a beautiful zebra cactus, added a touch of peace. My desk, surrounded by lush plants, was my sanctuary.
After sharing my decision with my parents and Ansh, our families met. My father's kind explanation and apology helped ease tensions.
My family struggled to accept my choice. Financial woes had taken a toll, and I knew my support was vital. Convincing them to accept my help took a toll on my emotions.
My sister's doubts lingered. "Is this just about the money, Naira?" her voice echoed in my mind. I didn't want to burden her with worries, especially as she prepared to move abroad.
Lost in thought, I jumped at the knock on the door. "Ma'am?" my assistant said.
"Yes?" I replied.
"It's 9 PM. Shall we leave? I've wrapped up your work."
I nodded, gathering my belongings. The usually bustling office now felt eerily quiet.
As we stepped out, the cool night air enveloped me, a stark contrast to the warmth of my office.
Neha's departure for London loomed, just a day away. We'd spent the past month preparing, grateful for my father's friend's connections that had smoothed the way.
Upon reaching home, I headed straight to Neha's room. "Neha?" I called softly.
She stood amidst her packed bags, her eyes clouded with sadness. "What's wrong, dear?" I asked, concern etched on my face.
"You lied, Niara," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
My heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?" I asked, trying to sound nonchalant despite the growing unease.
"You said it was all about the new job, but it wasn't, was it?" Neha's gaze pierced mine. "Papa's business was struggling, and I got this London opportunity. Your decision was for us, not just the job, wasn't it?"
Her words struck like a dagger, exposing the truth I'd hidden. A sudden shock coursed through my veins, leaving me breathless.
"Neha, stop overthinking this," I pleaded. "My decision was solely for myself. I wanted to establish my career before marriage, just like I always said."Neha's expression turned incredulous. "Save it, Niara. I know the truth." Her voice trembled with anger. "I saw your diary open in your room when I was leaving the gift. I know how you felt about Ansh. You liked him, but still chose to let him go. Why? What's wrong with you?"
Her words cut deep, exposing my hidden emotions.
"We could have handled this together," Neha continued, her anger boiling over. "I could have found a job elsewhere, and our family business is almost back on track. We wouldn't have been homeless. But no, you decided alone, sacrificing your happiness for us."
"Neha, what about your dreams? I didn't sacrifice anything. My family is my priority, and that includes you." I said, trying to reason with her.
"Your abroad plan when Papa's business struggled. I couldn't leave him to face it alone. And besides," I added with a gentle smile, "there are plenty of fishes in the sea, right? You always say that."
Neha's eyes sparkled mischievously. "Oh really? As I remember, your diary said, 'Uff, that guy has the smile of an angel and body of the devil!'" She mimicked, bursting into laughter.
I couldn't help but join in, and the tension dissipated.
"Naira, you should talk to him," Neha said, her expression turning serious. "You liked him, and the way he said yes that day... he has feelings for you too. Don't let your fears ruin it."
I shook my head. "It's been two months, Neha. He must have moved on."
"Maybe," Neha countered, "but he deserves the truth. You owe him that."
Her determination was unwavering. "I'm not leaving without a promise that you'll talk to him and clear the air."
"I promise," I said, unsure of what lay ahead.
The rest of the night unfolded into a joyful family gathering. Mom and Dad joined in, drawn by our contagious laughter. We shared stories, memories, and warmth, filling the room with love.
As the night drew to a close, I retreated to my room, my mind racing.
"How am I going to tell him?" I wondered, doubts creeping in. "Should I even try?"
Thoughts swirled, weighing pros and cons. What if he's moved on? What if he doesn't feel the same? What if...
I sat on my bed, lost in uncertainty, the promise to Neha echoing in my mind.
