Lily sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers grazing over the faded, yellowed pages of the documents Alex and Ben had handed her. The words blurred together as she read them, each line twisting the knife a little deeper into her heart. The betrayal was rooted in generations, hidden beneath polite smiles, empty promises, and the illusion of innocence. As she reached the end, her throat tightened. It was undeniable—Jack’s family and her own were tied in ways she could have never imagined.
Jack stood at the doorway, watching her with an anxious, pleading gaze. He wanted to reach out, to offer comfort, but the space between them felt like a chasm. Lily's face was etched with pain, her eyes fixed on the damning evidence in her hands.
Finally, she looked up, her voice barely a whisper, "Did you know, Jack? Did you know this…all this time?"
Jack stepped forward, but stopped himself, hesitating. “Lily… I didn’t know everything. I swear to you, I only found out pieces as I went along. But yes, I knew there was something dark between our families.”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears, and her voice broke, “And you still came into my life? Knowing this… you let me fall in love with you, knowing what your family had done to mine?”
“Lily, please,” he said, his voice thick with desperation. “I was as trapped as you are. I didn’t have all the answers. I just… I just knew that I cared about you. I never wanted to hurt you.”
“Then why didn’t you just tell me?” she choked out. “Why did you let me believe in something that was based on lies?”
Jack clenched his fists, struggling to keep his composure. “Because I was scared, Lily. I was scared that if you knew everything, you’d turn away from me. That you’d hate me. And…I couldn’t bear the thought of losing you.”
Lily looked away, biting her lip as a tear slipped down her cheek. Her voice was small, almost childlike, as she whispered, “But now I don’t know if any of it was real. Was any of it real, Jack?”
He took a step toward her, his face etched with pain. “Every moment with you was real, Lily. Every single moment.”
She shook her head, her voice cracking. “But it doesn’t change the fact that my family suffered, Jack. My father lost everything. Everything because of what your family did. And now… now I don’t know if I can ever look at you the same way.”
Jack’s face fell. He reached out, but she stepped back, her expression torn and fragile. “Please, Lily,” he whispered, his voice laced with desperation. “Don’t do this. Don’t throw away everything we’ve built.”
“Everything we’ve built?” she repeated, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. “Jack, do you even hear yourself? What we’ve built is a house of lies, held up by secrets and betrayal. How can I ever trust you again?”
He lowered his gaze, his hands falling to his sides in defeat. “I know I can’t change the past, Lily. I know I can’t undo the damage. But please… give me a chance to make things right. I love you. I love you more than anything.”
Lily swallowed hard, her shoulders trembling as she fought back the tears. “I thought I loved you too, Jack. But love built on lies… I don’t know if I can believe in that anymore.”
The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating. Jack looked at her, his face filled with regret, his eyes pleading for forgiveness. But Lily’s heart felt shattered beyond repair, the pieces scattered too far to ever be whole again.
