Milani couldn't respond as she had just began brushing her teeth, but once finished, she rinsed her toothbrush and her mouth before she grabbed her CeraVe cleanser and began washing her face. "Well um thank you...fa checking up on me 'n not to be rude but you could've just called me."
"Well, I didn't want to because I have something to ask, or really just to get closure." Laila cocked her head to the side teasingly as she fiddled with her fingers.
"Go ahead." Milani urged as she began rinsing her face under the cool water.
"Um...so you know since I wasn't there...someone told me you was leavin' wit Blake right before the whole shooting thing happened...'n I wanna know why."
"Who told you?" Milani got up, a little annoyed as she grabbed a towel to dry her face.
"Why you wanna know?" Laila inquired leaning against the door frame as she crossed her arms.
"Why you so concerned whether I'm wit Blake or not?" Milani quickly followed up, now looking over at her cousin with irritation.
"Because...I already told you he's not a good person." Laila deflected.
"Why you lying?...Cuz we both know that this ain't no 'I'm tryna protect my cousin' typa interrogation. It's givin' 'I don't want her around him'."
"I am tryna protect you," Laila argued back.
"Den you would've taken a different approach. Instead of talking to me 'n making it seem like I'm taking ya man, actually try and sound concerned cuz why you wanna know why we left togetha fa? Nobody else asked me dat except you, who wasn't even at da party to begin wit."
"Because I don't want you being wit da n*gga...he's not a good person."
"How? Cuz you have yet to tell me why I should stay away from him? I already know he a ho like ok we get it, he has attachment issues, what else?"
"You know what...whateva, go ahead 'n f*ck him, I'on even care, but know you gon have to argue wit auntie as to why you hanging around a n*gga I told you explicitly not to hang out wit."
"Excuse you?—"
"I feel like Diana should know dat a n*gga you swore was so annoying was the same n*gga you ended up leaving wit to do some grown sh*t."
Milani stared at Laila. Completely and utterly speechless.
It genuinely took every nerve in her body not to start cussing Laila out, especially because doing so would mess up all they had been through growing up.
'How dare she!? She'on got no f*cking right to rant about my mothaf*ckin' business to my mama who aint even in the same city' Milani thought.
Milani felt like it would've been fine if she herself told her mama what happened because she was there, but it confused and angered her as to why someone who wasn't even at the setting was telling someone else what happened at said setting when they didn't have the eyes to see it themselves, cause what if the source they got it from was incorrect? Then what?
Milani smiled, even giggled a bit as she kept her hands at her waist, looking around the bathroom as if she would find something to say.
"Get out." She finally spoke, her smile gone as she stared at Laila.
Laila stared back, not moving an inch.
"N*gga, I said get out." Milani raised her voice.
Laila stood her ground, clearly not expecting Milani to be this confrontational.
But Milani wasn't backing down, her gaze unwavering, her voice steady as one hand pointed to the door, the other clasping the blanket together.
"Laila, I'm serious. Get. Out," Milani said, each word laced with a finality that left no room for argument.
Laila's expression faltered, the rage in her eyes dimming just a little as she looked at Milani, clearly weighing whether or not to push further.
But something in Milani's gaze seemed to stop her.
Without another word, Laila scoffed, shook her head in disbelief, and finally turned to leave, muttering under her breath as she walked out. "Fine. But don't come cryin' to me when you end up pregnant wit a deadbeat baby daddy."
The door slammed behind her, leaving Milani alone in the silence, her anger slowly dissipating into an uncomfortable mix of guilt and frustration.
She stared at the closed door, a part of her regretting how things had escalated, but another part of her unwilling to let anyone, even Laila, get in her face like that.
Taking a deep breath, Milani walked to the kitchen in search of something to eat.
