The evening began like any other, the retreat buzzing with laughter and conversation as the guests gathered for dinner. The sky was already rumbling, dark clouds gathering over the sea, signaling the arrival of a storm. But Lily felt that her own heart had its storm brewing beneath the surface, as if the charged air held a warning she couldn’t quite grasp.

Throughout the meal, she couldn’t stop glancing at Jack, who seemed distracted, his eyes occasionally darting toward the far end of the room where Tina sat, surrounded by a group of retreat-goers. Lily’s heart clenched at the way his gaze lingered, even though she knew he hadn’t noticed her watching. She tried to focus on the conversation around her, but Tina’s laugh cut through the chatter, and each time it reached her, a wave of uncertainty swept over her.

After dinner, Lily excused herself, slipping out onto the terrace for some fresh air. She needed space to clear her head, to shake off the worry that had taken root inside her. The night air was cool and damp, carrying the scent of rain. She leaned against the railing, closing her eyes and letting the gentle breeze brush her cheeks.

But then, faint voices drifted to her from around the corner of the terrace. The sound of Jack’s voice, low and tense, made her heart skip a beat.

“Why did you come here, Tina?” His voice was filled with frustration, and she sensed a hint of something else—regret, maybe.

Tina’s response was soft, but Lily could still catch her words. “You really have to ask? Jack, I couldn’t just let things end like that. After everything we went through, you owe me more than silence.”

Jack sighed, his tone guarded. “We both agreed it was best to move on. What happened between us… it’s in the past.”

“Is it really, though?” Tina’s voice had a challenging edge. “Because from where I’m standing, it doesn’t look like you’ve moved on at all.”

Lily pressed herself against the wall, barely breathing. Her hands were trembling, and her mind was racing. She felt like she was intruding, like she had stumbled onto something she shouldn’t hear. Yet she couldn’t pull herself away.

“Tina,” Jack’s voice softened, almost pleading, “I told you, I’m with Lily now. I care about her… more than you realize.”

There was a brief silence, and Lily could imagine Tina’s expression, her cold eyes and the smirk that always seemed to linger on her lips. Then Tina spoke, her voice dripping with scorn. “Care about her? Jack, you and I both know you’re using her. This little romance of yours is nothing more than a distraction.”

“That’s not true,” Jack replied, his voice tight with anger. “Lily means something to me.”

“But does she really know you, Jack? Does she know the man I know? The man who would do anything to get what he wants?” Tina’s words struck like a knife, and Lily felt her heart sink.

Jack’s silence stretched on, and Lily’s heart raced faster, her mind spinning with questions. She wanted him to deny it, to tell Tina she was wrong, but the longer he stayed silent, the more her doubts grew.

Finally, Jack’s voice broke the quiet, his tone weary. “Tina, it’s over. Whatever you came here looking for, it’s not going to happen. I’m with Lily now, and I’m asking you to respect that.”

Tina laughed softly, a bitter sound. “Respect it? Fine, Jack. But don’t come crying to me when this little fantasy of yours crumbles. She’ll see through you, sooner or later. And when she does, don’t expect me to pick up the pieces.”

Lily felt her throat tighten, tears welling in her eyes. She couldn’t bear to hear more. Without thinking, she turned and walked quickly back into the retreat, her footsteps muffled by the rumble of thunder overhead. She slipped up to her room, closing the door softly behind her as her emotions crashed over her.

How could he keep something like this from her? Jack had told her that Tina was in the past, yet here he was, tangled in a web of secrets and half-truths with a woman who seemed to know him far better than Lily ever would. The thought made her heart ache, yet she couldn’t deny the flicker of anger sparking within her. She had been honest with Jack, had opened up in ways she never had with anyone else. And yet, he had kept her in the dark, hiding pieces of himself that she was only now beginning to glimpse.

A soft knock on her door broke her thoughts, and she froze, her pulse quickening. She didn’t need to open it to know who it was.

“Lily?” Jack’s voice was gentle, hesitant. “Are you awake?”

For a moment, she considered ignoring him, letting him stand there in silence. But then her anger flared again, and she got up, opening the door just enough to meet his eyes.

Jack looked at her, his expression filled with concern. “Is everything all right? I noticed you seemed upset earlier.”

Lily bit her lip, fighting to keep her emotions in check. “I’m fine,” she said, though her voice came out sharper than she’d intended.

He stepped closer, his hand reaching for hers, but she pulled back, wrapping her arms around herself. “Lily, what’s wrong?” he asked softly, his brows knitting together in worry.

She looked away, struggling to find the words. “Jack… are you being honest with me? About everything?”

He hesitated, and that tiny pause was enough to send a fresh wave of doubt crashing over her. “Of course I am,” he replied, though his tone lacked the conviction she desperately wanted to hear.

“Then why do I feel like there are things you’re not telling me?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Why does it feel like I’m just… part of some game you’re playing?”

Jack’s eyes widened, and he reached for her hand again, his grip gentle but firm. “Lily, no. It’s not like that. I care about you—more than I’ve ever cared about anyone.”

“Then why can’t you tell me the truth?” She pulled her hand away, stepping back, her heart pounding with a mixture of hurt and frustration.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Lily, there are parts of my past that I’m not proud of. Things I wish I could erase. But I promise you, they don’t change how I feel about you.”

She shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. “But they do, Jack. They change everything. Because if you’re not willing to share those parts of yourself with me, then how can I trust anything between us?”

The pain in his eyes was almost unbearable, and for a moment, she felt herself wavering. But then the memory of his conversation with Tina came rushing back, hardening her resolve.

“Please, Jack,” she said quietly, her voice barely a whisper. “If you really care about me… then prove it. Show me who you really are.”

Jack’s expression softened, and he took a step closer, his hand reaching up to gently cup her cheek. “Lily, I don’t want to lose you. You have no idea how much you mean to me.”

She felt her heart flutter at his touch, her resolve wavering once more. Despite everything, she wanted to believe him, to trust that he was telling the truth. But a part of her still held back, clinging to the doubts that had taken root.

“Then don’t keep secrets from me,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “If you want me to believe in us, then you have to be honest with me.”

Jack nodded, his gaze filled with a mixture of sadness and determination. “I will, Lily. I promise. Just… give me a little more time.”

She looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of deception, but all she saw was a man torn between his past and his desire to protect the fragile bond they had built. Slowly, she nodded, though her heart remained heavy with the weight of unanswered questions.

As the first raindrops began to fall outside, Jack leaned down, brushing his lips softly against hers. The kiss was gentle, filled with a longing that made her heart ache, yet it only deepened her uncertainty.

They stood there, wrapped in each other’s embrace as the storm raged outside, the thunder rumbling like a warning. And as they held each other, Lily couldn’t shake the feeling that their love was as fragile as the night itself—beautiful, but on the verge of breaking apart.
