"Thank you so much," I said softly, feeling a little awkward as I spoke to the man on the other end of the line.
"Of course," He responded, his tone unexpectedly warm for a man of his age and stature. He appeared to be in his mid-forties, with a calm yet authoritative presence. "Don't worry about anything. Just let my assistant know if you need something, and he'll make the arrangements. He'll be there to help in my place."
I took a calming breath. "I appreciate it," I said, feeling relief settle in as I ended the call.
Gigi, who'd been watching me the whole time, raised an eyebrow. "So, what did he say?"
"He was actually... nice," I replied, my fingers tracing the edges of the calling card. "I thought he'd just brush me off or say it wasn't his problem."
It had been a month since the motorcycle accident. At first, I convinced myself it was just a minor scrape. But as days turned into weeks, the ache in my arm grew worse, making even simple movements painful. I knew I needed help, but going to a doctor felt impossible with my budget.
I didn't have the money to get it checked, but then I remembered the driver pressing this card into my hand, saying to call if I needed help.
I hesitated to reach out, convinced they'd probably ignore me since it had taken me a month to finally make contact. To my surprise, though, I found myself speaking directly with the driver's boss, who, much to my relief, hadn't hesitated for a moment to offer his help.
I carefully placed the calling card back into my wallet. Just then, my face lit up as I saw Maddy approaching our bench here in the school cafeteria. She was grinning widely, and I couldn't help but feel my heart race with excitement at the sight of her waving what seemed to be tickets in her hand.
"I got them! I got us tickets to the swimming competition!" She exclaimed, practically bouncing with energy.
She plopped down beside me, grinning, and handed me a ticket. As she did, I noticed a meaningful look in her eyes, almost as if she understood the excitement building inside me. "One for you," She said, Her smile brightening even more. Then she turned to Gigi, holding out the last ticket. "And one for you, too!"
"You really got them?!" I took the ticket, sharing her excitement.
"Yep!" Maddy laughed, her eyes sparkling. "We're going to have the best seats. I can't wait!"
Gigi took the last ticket, almost rolling her eyes. We couldn't help but laugh at her reaction.
This weekend, Beacon Hill — the school of elites and wealthy — would be hosting an open house event filled with sports competitions, a variety of extracurricular activities, booths, and even parties. Most areas were open to all, but watching the sports events required a ticket, which made it feel like an exclusive experience.
This would be the first time since I started college that I would get to experience an open gate event at another school. The thought of Beacon Hill sent a thrill through me. Just hearing its name made me feel like I was stepping into a different world!
Gigi turned to Maddy with a smirk, saying, "Thanks! We have connections, thanks to Zach!" Yeah, she was referring to Maddie's boyfriend, Zach, who happened to be studying at Beacon Hill. "The last time we checked, the tickets for the swimming event were almost sold out, but thanks to him, we managed to score free ones!"
Maddy just tucked her hair behind her ear and pouted, as if to say, "Nah, it's no big deal." Her playful attitude made us all laugh, but I could tell she was secretly proud of Zach's help.
