The morning sunlight shone over the camp, making everything seem quieter than the battlefield of the night before. The sounds of the townspeople bustling about and children crying felt distant to Engfa. In her mind, there was only one goal: to find Charlotte.
As she approached the western part of the camp, Engfa noticed a group of people receiving care from nurses. Her heart raced as her gaze quickly scanned each person, searching for a familiar silhouette. And then, in the distance, she saw a woman with long black hair, neatly tied back, in a familiar light blue nurse uniform.
It was Charlotte.
Engfa felt as if all sounds around her faded away. The only thing that remained was the image of Charlotte caring for the patients. She was still calm and gentle, just like before. Engfa's heart overflowed with joy mixed with confusion. She quickened her pace, moving closer to Charlotte.
Charlotte suddenly looked up and saw Engfa approaching. Their eyes met, and in that moment, they both realized that the distance between them over the past few days only made their feelings for each other clearer.
Charlotte smiled, a gentle smile filled with so many emotions. She stepped toward Engfa, and as she got closer, her eyes reflected a mix of worry and joy. Charlotte (smiling gently):
• Engfa, I didn't expect to see you here. Are you hurt?
Engfa, still unable to fully control her emotions, nodded slightly. She felt relieved to see Charlotte safe and sound. But more than that, she realized her heart had not stopped beating for her. Engfa (voice trembling):
• I... I was worried about you. When I heard there was a new nurse coming, I... thought of you right away.
Charlotte was taken aback for a moment, her cheeks flushing slightly at Engfa's heartfelt words. She hadn't expected Engfa to worry about her to this extent, and it made her heart soften, sensing the invisible yet strong bond between them.
However, the joy was short-lived as she noticed signs of distress on Engfa's body.
Charlotte quickly recognized something unusual. Her sharp eyes immediately spotted a small stain of blood on Engfa's uniform. Her heart tightened with worry. Charlotte hurried over:
• Engfa, your wound? You haven't been resting properly, have you?
Charlotte's voice was filled with concern. As she approached Engfa, she didn't hesitate for a moment and immediately checked the wound on her side. Although she knew Engfa could take care of herself, her worry prevented her from looking the other way.
• Let me see!
Engfa hesitated, looking down at her wound. Before she could react, Charlotte bent down, gently lifting the hem of Engfa's shirt to reveal the bandage underneath, now soaked with blood.
• I'm fine, just... an old wound. - Engfa (embarrassed)
Charlotte looked at Engfa, her gaze both reproachful and caring:
• You call this "fine"? Look, it's bleeding! Why aren't you resting and are still trying to move around like this? - Charlotte (serious)
Engfa bit her lip, feeling a bit embarrassed by Charlotte's excessive concern for her. But deep down, she felt warm realizing Charlotte's care for her was not merely a professional duty.
Charlotte didn't wait for any more objections from Engfa. She quickly opened her medical bag, taking out clean gauze and antiseptic. Under her skillful hands, Charlotte began to change the dressing and clean Engfa's wound.
• You need to be more careful, Engfa. If this wound isn't taken care of properly, it could get infected. - Charlotte (gently)
Engfa stood still, allowing Charlotte to care for her. She felt every touch from her gentle yet firm hands. Charlotte's hands were delicate and professional, but in each gesture, Engfa sensed genuine worry and care. Engfa (softly):
• I... thank you, Charlotte.
The gratitude wasn't just for the care she received, but also for healing the wounds in her heart.
Charlotte looked up at Engfa, her eyes reflecting warmth mixed with reproach:
• What are you thanking me for? You should know to take care of yourself. As an officer, you have to be responsible for yourself before you can care for others.
Engfa smiled softly at Charlotte's seriousness but warmth. She wasn't used to receiving care from others, but Charlotte made her feel different.
After finishing the dressing, Charlotte stood up, her gaze still fixed on Engfa. She felt a nameless worry arise, but at the same time, relief filled her mind as she saw Engfa doing better. Charlotte (sighing in relief):
• Luckily, your wound isn't too serious. But you must rest. If not, I will personally make you lie down.
Engfa chuckled lightly at Charlotte's joking threat, but in her heart, she felt the sincerity and warmth. She knew Charlotte truly cared for her, and that made her heart flutter more than ever.
• Alright, I will listen to you. But only if you promise to take care of yourself as well. - Engfa (smiling)
Charlotte frowned, her lips curling into a light but challenging smile:
•I'm not the one who's injured here, Engfa. You're the one who needs taking care of.
Their conversation was filled with emotions - worry, responsibility, but also the gentle tremors of feelings that were gradually blossoming between them. Engfa felt an invisible thread tightening between her and Charlotte, a bond she could neither break nor wish to.
