"What's a pretty girl like you doing out here?" the man said, walking around to face her front, the gun still pointed at her head.

"I— I just came to get my things," she said. "I'm moving out."

"Oh really? You're not hiding a compass are you?" he asked. Another man came up behind him, this one taller and burlier though.

"No, no, no, I'm not," Evelyn stuttered. "I'm not trying to cause any trouble. I just wanted to grab a few clothes and some toiletries."

The men looked at her with suspicion. Evelyn hoped someone would show up soon to save her. Her brother probably ran off at the sight of these men, but for all she knew he could be dead inside.

"Is Routledge your father?"

"Um, yeah, he was, but he's dead now," Evelyn gulped. "I don't want to live in this place anymore. I want to go far away."

Maybe if she could convince them she didn't want to be a part of the stupid treasure hunt her dad was on, they would let her leave in one piece.

"Uh huh," the second man said. "And do you know anything about the compass? Where it is? Who has it? Etc?"

"No, not really," she said. "Just that my dad never took it off. He took it with him when he disappeared. I haven't seen it since then."

She swallowed. The men were getting closer. It was getting harder to think that they might let her go. For what felt like eternity, they just stood there, staring at each other.

Evelyn made sure to look the one with the gun right in the eyes. If he realized she was still human, and was still young, he might let her go.

"Well then, I guess we're gonna have to let you go," the burly one said. Evelyn breathed. She was going to be okay. They weren't going to kill her.

She had just closed her eyes when she felt a sharp pain tearing down her arm. When she grasped it, she felt hot blood streaming down. She screamed in pain, but it didn't help.

"That's to remind you what could happen if you tell anyone," one of the men said. She didn't see which one.

As Evelyn grasped her arm, she knelt to the ground. The men had cut open the length of her forearm, from her elbow to wrist. She was bleeding profusely, and she knew she needed to get to the hospital.

She had dropped her phone earlier, so she quickly began searching for it. The rumble from the truck let her know that the men had started driving away.

When she found her phone, she began crying. They had smashed it. She needed paramedics and they had smashed her phone.

"EVELYN!" someone shouted.

She looked over and saw her brother and his friends exiting out of the chicken coop. That's why the chickens were going crazy.

"Holy shit," he said as he knelt next to her. "Uh, someone call 911."

They weren't going to make it in time if the bleeding wasn't stopped.

"Gauze," she said. "I need gauze."

"What?" John B asked.

"I got it," the blonde one said, before running into the house. Evelyn did not trust that he had it. He was stupid enough to point a gun at Topper, then he was definitely stupid enough to not know first aid.

"I can't get anyone," Kiara said.

"Me either," replied the other boy.

"Fuck, uh, we're gonna have to get you to the hospital," John B explained. Just then, the blonde boy came running out of the house with a first aid kit.
