Dumbledore called Y/n to his office, the familiar sight of the spiral staircase leading him up to the towering, circular room where Fawkes the phoenix perched quietly on his stand. The air was filled with the scent of ancient tomes and the gentle ticking of clocks, a calm contrast to the storm of thoughts racing through Y/n's mind. As he entered, Dumbledore sat behind his large desk, his eyes twinkling with a mix of wisdom and concern.
“Y/n, please sit,” Dumbledore said kindly, gesturing to a chair in front of him. “I imagine you have many questions after the events of the past few days.”
Y/n sat down, fidgeting slightly as he replayed the attack on the Hogwarts Express in his mind—the screech of the Rathalos, the panic, and the moment he was forced to reveal more of his powers than he intended.
“I’ve given the attack considerable thought,” Dumbledore began, leaning forward slightly, “and I firmly believe it was no random occurrence. Someone sent that Rathalos, and their target was not just Harry Potter but you as well.”
Y/n’s eyes widened. “But why? Who would want me and Harry dead?”
Dumbledore stroked his long beard thoughtfully. “That is the question, isn’t it? I suspect it has something to do with your lineage, Y/n. I’m sure you’ve noticed by now that your powers are not entirely ordinary.”
Y/n frowned. “You mean my Animagus transformation? The Nargacuga?”
Dumbledore nodded. “Yes, your Nargacuga form is a significant part of who you are, but it’s more than that. You are not just any Animagus. Your connection to the creature is far deeper than most realize—almost as if it is an extension of your soul. And then there’s the matter of your heritage.”
Y/n shifted uncomfortably. “Yeah, I remember the Sorting Hat saying that.”
Dumbledore gazed at him over his half-moon spectacles, his voice gentle yet firm. “You are a direct descendant of Merlin, Y/n. One of the greatest wizards to have ever lived.”
Y/n’s heart skipped a beat. He had always known his family were magical, especially with who his parents are, but Merlin? The most famous sorcerer in all wizarding history?
“Merlin?” Y/n repeated, barely able to believe it. “But…how? I mean, I knew my family had a history, but not that kind of history.”
Dumbledore smiled warmly. “It’s not something that would have been readily discussed. The bloodline of Merlin is powerful, but it has remained dormant for centuries. Until now apparently.”
Y/n stared down at his hands, trying to process the weight of what he had just learned. It explained so much—the unusual control he had over his Animagus form, his raw magical power, and even his ability to defeat the black dragons at such a young age. Yet it also raised more questions. Why now? Why him?
Dumbledore continued, “I believe that your lineage is why you lost control during your first transformation into the Nargacuga. The sheer power of Merlin’s magic mixed with the raw, primal nature of your Animagus form—it overwhelmed you. That would also explain your ability to defeat the four black dragons so effortlessly. Most wizards would struggle against one, let alone four.”
