ISABELLA WAS slumped in the passenger seat, her eyes red and puffy from crying. The city lights blurred past the window, and the hum of the car engine was the only sound filling the silence between them.

Walker glanced over at her, his face a mix of concern and helplessness. He wanted to say something comforting, but words felt inadequate.

As they pulled up to the house, the porch light cast a warm glow on the front steps. Walker parked the car and turned off the engine.

He got of the drivers seat and made his way to the passengers side. "Come on, let's get you inside," he said, wrapping an arm around her to steady her.

He quietly unlocked the door and went up to Isabella's room, making sure to not wake either of their parents.

He gently placed her on her bed. Walker looked at the tires for a second before sitting down next to her. The silence almost deafening. He reached out, gently grabbing her hand. "You gonna be okay?" he asked softly.

Isabella hiccuped and nodded slowly.

Walker sighed, trying to find the right words. "It'll get better, I promise. You just need some time."

Isabella shook her head, tears welling up again. "But why did he break up with me? at my birthday party nonetheless," she sniffed.

Walker felt a pang of sympathy. "Sometimes people just aren't meant to be together, no matter how much we want it," he said gently.

"I wasn't good enough for him, Walker. I'm not pretty enough, I'm a bad girlfriend," she said, her voice breaking. Walker shook his head, "Don't say that, bee."

"It's true."

"No it's not, Isabella. You're perfect, and you deserve someone better than August."

Isabella sat down on her bed, looking at Walker with a mixture of sadness and disbelief. "You're only saying that because you're my best friend," she mumbled.

Walker sat next to her, taking her hand. "I mean it, Isabella. You're perfect just as you are."

She managed a small smile. "Thanks, Walker."

He returned the smile, standing up to leave. "You'll be okay?" He squeezed her hand. She nodded, "i'll be fine. Thank you, walk."

Walker smiled and gave her hand on last squeeze before he got up. Isabella watched him walk out, then sighed and let herself fall back on her bed, drifting off to sleep.
