Seraphina: "Okay, you rat, what got you up so early?" she mutters, rubbing her tired eyes.
"I thought you were more of a night owl."
Viola: "Mommy, don't tell me you forgot! You gotta remember, you got to!"
Seraphina: "Remember what?" she asks, squinting at her daughter as the morning light spills into the cabin.
Viola: "You told me that once I turn this many years old-" Viola holds up two fingers proudly, her small hand shaking with excitement.
"-you would start taking me outside more."
Seraphina pauses, blinking in disbelief. "How the hell do you even remember that? You were three months old, kid!"
Viola: "That's not the point, woman!" Viola stomps her foot, glaring.
"You promised, and you always say you gotta deliver on your promises!"
Seraphina sighs deeply, running a hand through her messy hair.
"You really are your father's daughter, using my own words against me. Too young for these tactics."
She crosses her arms. "And stop calling me 'woman,' young lady."
Viola tilts her head, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "Why do you keep saying those big words?
I don't think you understand them either."
She mutters to herself, though still loud enough for Seraphina to catch.
Seraphina snorts. "You're not allowed to use big words until you know what they mean.
Got it?"
Viola: "What? That's not fair! How come you get to say them but I can't? That's so...profound!" Viola pouts, crossing her tiny arms.
Seraphina: "That's not what that means."
She chuckles.
"And as you keep pointing out, I'm a woman. You're still a baby-at least in human standards."
Viola's eyes light up with defiance. "That's so sporadic adultery! I say...adultery!
This is a...convoluted conspiracy against me and my rights!"
As Viola rants, her words tumble over each other, becoming unintelligible. Seraphina shakes her head, her thoughts drifting.
"What am I gonna do with this rat?" She exhales, a tired smile curling on her lips.
It's obvious to anyone-Viola is a peculiar child. Only two years old, but walking and talking fluently like she's been around for years.
Hell, she was born with her eyes open.
"Guess that's the vampire genes for you," Seraphina thinks, watching her daughter carefully.
Vampires grow up fast, always on alert for threats.
Viola's development was slower than a pure-blood vampire's, but far beyond human standards.
