EVERLEIGH

HUMINGA ako nang malalim, pilit pinipigilan ang nanginginig kong mga kamay habang mahigpit kong hawak ang phone ko. My heart hammered in my chest, every beat a reminder that time was slipping through my fingers.

They got Everlynn. My twin. The only person who knows me better than I know myself. And now. . . they were using her as leverage.

They sent us a code. A threat.

I felt the familiar swirl of panic rising, but I forced it down, swallowing the lump in my throat. This wasn't the time to break down. I couldn't afford to lose control, not when Everlynn was counting on me to keep my head clear. But every second felt like another drop of poison, seeping into my thoughts, clouding my judgment.

"Everleigh, focus, kailangan mong mag-focus." Atticus's voice cut through the storm in my mind. He was beside me, his steady gaze locked on the phone. His calmness was almost infuriating, like he wasn't grasping the gravity of the situation.

"They have her, Atticus," I whispered harshly, my voice shaking as the fear I'd been trying so hard to contain finally spilled out. My throat tightened with every word, each one laced with the raw terror clawing at my chest. "This is more than just a game to them! Everlynn's life—" I couldn't finish the sentence. My breath hitched, and my voice cracked. "She's my twin. If they hurt her..."

The weight of those words nearly crushed me. What if they already have? The thought echoed in my mind, gnawing at every fragile bit of composure I had left.

Atticus didn't flinch. Not even for a second. His eyes stayed locked on mine, steady and unwavering, like he was absorbing my panic without letting it break him. Then, without saying a word, he reached out and gently pulled the phone from my trembling hands. His fingers brushed against mine, warm and grounding, his grip firm but careful—like he knew I was on the verge of unraveling and that one wrong move might push me over the edge.

"Alam ko," he said quietly, his voice steady and sure. "That's why we can't afford to fall apart right now. Not when they're expecting us to. I need you sharp, Everleigh. Your twin needs you sharp." He paused, his gaze boring into me with an intensity that made my heart stop.

"I need the Miss-Top-One in you right now. The Miss-Top-One who beats me at first honor. The Miss-Top-One na palaging naka-chin up at walang inaatrasan."
