"Saedii! Wake up!"

Saedii jerked up in her chair. The book in her lap tumbled to the floor, nearly knocking over the mug of tea on the table. A puddle of warm sunlight cloaked her, nice against her skin. The reason she'd fallen asleep.

In front of her, a boy of around fourteen grinned at her. He was tall for his age, but gangly. Pale, with dark eyes, almost black, but a kind smile. Dark hair wreathed his head, so long that it draped over one shoulder.

"You can fall asleep anywhere," Kalth joked as he sat in the chair beside her.

"It's a gift," Saedii teased, reaching down to pick up the book.

Kalth held out a hand and the book flew straight into it. He turned it, reading the front cover. "No wonder you were sleeping. 'Politics of the Old Republic' sounds pretty boring."

She snatched the book back. "It wasn't boring."

"Right. It was so exciting that you couldn't help but fall asleep."

Saedii rolled her eyes. "Shouldn't you be in the training room? I thought you had time scheduled with the training droids."

That easy grin stretched even wider. "I did, but Master Yoda stopped me on the way. He sent me to come find you."

"Me? Why?"

"He said he wants to speak with both of us."

A flutter of excitement wriggled in her belly. If Master Yoda wanted to see them, it could only mean one thing. "You're sure?"

"I'm sure." Kalth looked ready to burst out of his skin. "It's time. We're finally being promoted to Padawans."

In a single move, Saedii stood and reshelved the book among the shelves beside her. Then, she straightened her robes, quickly trying to make herself presentable.

She'd trained here for the past twelve years as a youngling. Had mastered all of her forms and excelled at learning the ways of the Force. With news of the Clone Wars filling the halls, she'd wondered when her time would come. When she'd be called forth to fulfill her ultimate duty.

The time was now.

Finally, she was to become a Padawan.

Kalth was just as excited at her side. He kept nervously reaching down to brush his lightsaber at his belt, as if reassuring himself that it was still there. "Who do you think they'll assign as your Master?"

"I'm not sure." In her head, Saedii went back over the list of Jedi knights who didn't currently have a Padawan learner. "Master Secura hasn't yet trained a Padawan. Masters Fitso and Kenobi are also unattached, though I'm not sure if they are ready to take on another yet."

"I'm hoping that I get assigned to Master Skywalker," Kalth said.

Saedii cut him a look. It had only been a few weeks since Ahsoka Tano had shocked the Order and left. It had caused quite the stir among the younglings, who had all looked up to her. She'd been a prodigy in her time at the temple, and had excelled in the Clone Wars under Master Skywalker's instruction. Her absence was a devastating loss to the Jedi.

"I don't think Master Skywalker is ready for a new Padawan," Saedii pointed out.

Kalth gave a little shrug. "You never know."
