Loud banging woke little Keenan. He slowly lifted his head to the sound of boots stopping on the other side of the bars. With his back to the wall, his knees were held against his chest as he wrapped his arms around his legs.
"If it ain't the alpha's son," the guard chuckled with his rotten yellow teeth sucked between his lips. "Time for class. President said you're finally free to join the others."
Keenan stared at him with a blank face. He tried to make out words but couldn't understand him. When he started opening the bars, his head lifted and his eyes narrowed. Was this a trick?
The guard cocked his head to the side as he stepped to the side. Keenan slowly stood up but his eyes never left the big bulky man's face. He could smell his brother. It was faint but he knew he was alive. He smelled alive and well. He felt relieved.
The guard escorted him back to his room. As they were walking, Keenan walked with his head down, avoiding the eyes of many alphas who stared at him along the way since his face was smudged with dry blood and speckles of dirt.
He could hear the soft conversations they had. He heard his name drip from the lips of many. Once he made it back to his dorm, the guard opened the door and Keenan's head raised to find Killian standing in the middle of the room with his hands fidgeting at his sides.
Keenan tilted his head with a frown set on his lips. He noticed Killian staring at himself in the mirror, feeling on his cheek.
"Both of you get ready. I'll be standing out here, waiting to escort you to class," the guard gruffly ordered while ushering Keenan into the room before closing the door.
Killian turned to his brother and his eyes quickly examined him from head to toe. "You've been gone for days..."
"They held me in a cell," Keenan murmured as he slowly walked up to his brother. His eyes were cold and dead as before. "I nearly broke."
Killian blinked. Not once or twice. He was baffled at the sight of his brother's sunken cheeks and his shoulders deflated. It made him...angry.
"Father once said to never let people see you weak," Keenan recalled, his eyes on the floor.
"Who gives a fuck?" Killian angrily mumbled then cupped his brother's face to force him to look him in the eyes. "Father doesn't love us."
Keenan noticed there was something different about his brother. A change. He noticed there were speckles of a darker shade amid his swirling eyes. "That's why he sent us here; to fix us..."
Killian released a low chuckle as he entered the bathroom and then returned with a warm washcloth.
"Sit down so I can clean you," he coldly demanded as he grabbed his brother's chair from under the desk then planted it in front of the mirror.
Keenan's brow cocked as he sat down with Killian standing behind him. "I'm a failure," he softly said, staring at his reflection.
Killian gently dabbed the washcloth on his brother's dirtied cheek. "If we're going to survive here, you have to break that mentality," he murmured. Although his voice was low, Keenan heard every word.
"No one loves us. We only have each other," Killian repeated in his ear. "Do you understand, brother?"
Keenan released a sigh. "Not even Mama?" That question left Killian wondering. He turned to the mirror and they locked gazes.
