To say that my week was eventful, was an understatement. On Wednesday, City played in the Carabao Cup away against Newcastle, but unfortunately lost. Pep didn't put too much importance to that competition because he wanted his star players fit, so he let his B-team play, and Ruben spent the evening on the bench. But even if the competition wasn't important for them, I knew that he hated losing.

I texted Ruben a message that I was sorry about the loss, but he just replied curtly, so I let him be. Which was alright, because the next day was interesting enough. It started with Sarah finding me early the next morning in our locker room, looking somewhat agitated. "Corbyn, you got a minute?" she asked me and I nodded, making some space on my bench for her as I was tying up my trainers. "Um... Sorry that I was gone so quickly after we had lunch, but..." she brabbled and looked around to check if someone was listening. "Is it really true that Davis laid hands on you?" she whispered and my heart stopped.
I couldn't manage to form words, so I just nodded slowly. "Fuck... I'm so sorry" she said and put her hand on my thigh, rubbing it a bit in a gesture of comfort while I just nodded, still not sure how this conversation was going to pan out. "It's just that... You know Alice? She started with us and she was rotating on Davis' team a few months ago" Sarah asked. "Yeah, I remember her" I mumbled.
"Um... So try to not freak out now..." she said quietly and looked around her once again. "I didn't want to tell you at the time because I thought you were a stuck-up bitch and it served you right, but... He had an affair with her" she told me and my jaw dropped. "What?" I asked faintly. I just couldn't believe this. I mean, yeah, he turned out to be a dick, but things were taking a turn for the worse right now.
"I'm so sorry. But a few weeks in, he turned quite aggressive. He... started being violent with her too... Choking, he grabbed her in ways that left marks for days..." she continued and I was falling from more and more clouds. "Alice struggled with it for such a long time, she ended it and wanted to go to HR but she was afraid that she wasn't going to be heard. I'm... sorry if I overstepped but I told her that he did the same with you and... maybe if you went together you'd have more of a chance" she concluded.
"Sorry if that was too much..." she said when I still didn't speak. "I... I have to get to work now" I mumbled and stood up, starting to walk away, but after a few steps I turned around again to her. "But tell Alice that we should talk. We could grab lunch together" I said decidedly. I didn't know if I personally really had the strength to do this, but I knew that Ruben would be proud of me if I did.
We decided to meet in a break room instead of the cafeteria for more privacy and besides Sarah, Alice and me there was also a girl named Emma, who apparently was Alice's best friend and also knew about... this. "So you're saying he did it more than once to you?" I whispered agitatedly. There were still other people going in and out and this wasn't really a conversation you wanted everyone to know about.
"Yeah, two or three more times after I ended it" Alice replied. "My gosh, how aren't you afraid to still work here?" I asked. "I switched to pathology, which is located underground so there's little chance to run into him" she replied and shrugged. "But that's unfair!" I countered and rubbed my front with my hands.
"You think if we go to HR together they'll hear us? And believe us?" I asked the girls who were all now looking at me as if I was going to be the saviour of every woman in this hospital. "Sophia, your dad is pretty well known here in Manchester medical circles, so yeah, we think they'd rather believe you, if you show up with backup, rather than just her alone" Emma replied. "I come from a small village on the coast, I'm the first person from there to even graduate from a university, so I don't really have the connections in the medical field to start a riot" Alice mumbled.
In the corner of my eyes, I saw a woman eyeing us and I turned to her. "Can we help you?" I asked loudly, directing my question at her. "S-sorry, I..." she quickly stammered and was about to walk outside, but she turned around again after a few steps and walked to our table. "W-were you talking about Dr Davis?" she asked and Sarah's eyes widened. "Don't tell me you too-" she groaned and I covered my eyes with my hand. I felt so stupid. I had been in a relationship with the biggest asshole on this planet.
"If- if you two go, I go too" the woman said Alice and I looked at each other, knowing that everyone here wanted me to take the decision. We could be potentially exposing ourselves to more violence or even worse, dismissals if they decided that keeping Ed, a highly-valued neurosurgeon was worth more than two interns and a resident. "I... I have to sleep on this for a bit" I told them and I could see that they were slightly disappointed, but for me, everything was still way more recent and fresher than for them.
"But if we go, we go next week. I know that he's in California then for some neurology congress" I told them.
