My team wish me good luck as they pat me on the back, a few fans shout and cheer as I pass them, I smile politely, shoving my hands into my pockets to hide the anxious trembling. Hardly anybody knows about my pre-race nervousness, despite me having more wins than losses when it comes to races, I still feel like every race is my first. There's only one person I can find comfort in before I'm ushered into the pit, and that's my boyfriend.
As if being summoned by my thoughts, Leon emerges, hopping over the gates as security shout and try to stop him, I let out a small laugh as Leon ducks under one man's arm, narrowly avoiding being caught as I jog to him, immediately wrapping my arms around him as I give the security thumbs up and grateful murmurs.
"Hey, love," Leon softly mumbles, brushing my hair down as I inhale shakily and cling to him as some members of my team try to order me to hurry up, "how's the nerves? You're shaking like a damn leaf."
I huff a laugh, feeling more at ease as Leon's hands move to my back, rubbing away the anxiousness as his warmth seeps into me. His chin rests on my head as his arms squeeze me to him, and then as my team's urgency picks up, Leon begins guiding me down to the track. "I'm the same as ever, which is worried and a little sick." I whisper just in case there's any secret reporters or competition listening in. Being a female in Formula One is hard enough, but being this 'champion' brings a whole new level of pressure. Leon's spent countless nights reassuring me I'm deserving of the title, he's been there for me since day we met, when he asked if I knew how to drive.
Leon sighs, reluctantly releasing me as I push away and begin to put on my gloves and check my helmet. He watches with awe, blue eyes shining proudly as if I'm donning luxurious garments rather than stiff materials. In the background, the sound of revving engines and screams from the crowd fill the silence between us. I take steadying breaths, listening to my team as they give me the rundown of our plan one last time. Leon's hand links with mine, holding as best he can as he just stands by my side, being here for me even when nothing is said. When the countdown begins, Leon kisses my helmet, "Come bring another trophy home, baby." He murmurs, before following a few members of my team to the viewing area.
I head to my car, mind clearing as reality once again sinks in. I know how much my headspace can affect how I drive, so I switch off my thoughts and emotions as I focus on the thrill and logic I know I'm going to use. I fist bump my team, feigning confidence before climbing into my car, letting people do the final security checks as I search for Leon in the crowd. I find him right away, watching me with a smile as he devours popcorn with surprising speed, it usually means he's stressed, but I know his faith in me is unwavering. Racing isn't a simple or safe sport, especially when I'm constantly battered with comments about F1 being a 'men's sport', but I'm always careful, and try my damn best by giving it all I've got.
In no time, the race begins in a rush of adrenaline and a few snarky comments about my opponents. I overtake and narrowly miss crashing when a car veers to close to me, but I gain control quickly and use the fuck up to motivate me. I already envision Leon holding his breath, knee bouncing as he stares at the screens, I hate to put him through the worry, but despite it he's always stuck with me, admitting he's terrified of my profession, but also loves me because of it too.
When I cross the finish line, first place secured, I squeal and fist bump the air, hearing the fans go wild for me as I stop and stand on the car. My heart beats rapidly as I tug off my helmet, grinning at the people surrounding me, but the voice I hear the most of is that of my boyfriend. "That's my girl! I fucking knew she'd win it! I love you, baby!"
I giggle as I see Leon beeline through the crowd. Before I can even hop off of the car, Leon's wrapping his arms around my waist, picking me up as I grab onto him and let him spin me around. Cameras flash and other cars begin to park, all hurrying to get ready for the celebration ceremony, but my biggest trophy is Leon's wide grin. He sets me on my feet, grabbing my face with two hands as he kisses me deeply. "I did it!" I breathlessly say as Leon nods, leading us to the podium.
"Yeah you did, and you looked so good doing it too. I'm so proud of you, my sweet, beautiful champion." Leon murmurs, gently pushing me as I'm led onto the podium where the awards are handed out. Afterwards, I'm 'asked' to do numerous interviews and some media promotion, despite being exhausted I do it, since it's still part of my job. Leon brings me water and food as I prepare for each interview, he lingers not far from me, frowning at the subtle underhanded comments and sexism. At one point he even shakes his head, cutting in to defend me until I hold up a hand and begin defending myself.
Once the day's over, Leon practically carries me to the hotel before helping me shower until I collapse into bed. A few days later, Leon and I find ourselves at the beach in a different country, I wanted to use the short break between races to spend time with Leon, and I also wanted to treat Leon to a nice vacation away from his job. It's been a gruelling season, and some much needed rest and relaxation is just what I need.
I lounge in a sun chair, sunglasses perched on my nose and book in hand as the ocean waves crash against the shore. Leon lays beside me, both of us snuggled up together on the longer despite it being made for once person, his arm drapes over my stomach as he relaxes under the sun. I've never been more content in my life, but like always, the fame soon catches up.
I hear the excited chatter first, then I crack open an eye to find a group of fans watching me from a short distance away- they're mostly men, and straight away Leon's sitting up, puffing out his chest as I snort and follow, resting a hand on his tanned shoulder to reassure him silently. My lips curve invitingly, and a young boy comes strolling over, holding out a newspaper showing a positive segment of my recent win. "Excuse me, Miss Y/L/N, would you sign this please?" He asks a little timidly.
"Of course, and you can call me Y/N. What's your name?" I ask, taking the pen from him and signing my article and dedicating it to the little boy. He stutters a reply, and soon enough he gains the confidence to pepper me with questions whilst Leon smiles warmly at the adorable interaction. The rest of the group of fans begin to edge closer, now assured that I'm willing to meet and greet. I stand, shaking the men's hands and answering questions, I also take a few pictures with them, noticing how Leon's shoulders tense up and his eyes narrow when one man's hand slides a little low.
I laugh it off, waving goodbye to the fans as they excitedly disperse. I turn to Leon, seeing him terribly hide his jealousy, it's always amusing how protective he gets, even though he's got nothing to worry about. I arch a brow, climbing onto Leon's lap to straddle him as he buries his face into my neck, lips kissing me as I tilt my head back and savour the feeling. "There's no need to be jealous, handsome." I giggle. Leon makes a noise of disagreement, sounding more like a child as his fingers dig into my hips.
I gasp, knowing I've got to change the subject before we make a scene. "Did you see the title of that article? It was called 'Formula One's Fierce Queen and Her Mystery Man'. I would've thought by now they'd know that you're here to stay, especially since we've been together for a while now. Looks like we're become an 'it' couple or something."
Leon chuckles, pulling back as his hand cups my ass without restraint. We've both found it amusing how the media paints him to be some 'mystery' just because he's not famous or anything, it doesn't change the fact that I love him, fame or none. Leon doesn't care about the attention, he hardly even believed me when I first told him I was famous. "Maybe I should make it more clear that we're together. I bet a big, shiny ring would do the trick." He grins as I snort, but his eyes aren't all that playful. My smile fades as he reaches into his pocket, pulling out...a ring. My jaw drops as he wiggles it in the air, "Make me mystery husband instead?" Leon muses.
I nod, letting him slip the ring on my finger as I crash my lips to his. As the sub begins to dip behind us, I know that no matter how many first places or trophies I gain, my biggest win would always be cheering in the stands for me, not only as my boyfriend- or husband- but as my number one fan.
