“So, how does it feel knowing that the biggest prick in the world is your son?” Butcher asked.
“Oh, just peachy. Couldn’t be happier." He shot back.
Butcher raised an eyebrow.
“Right, because that’s normal.”
“Honestly? I’m disappointed. He’s nothing like me. I may have my flaws but I’d never use my powers to hurt people the way he does. It’s just... it’s hard to accept that my own blood has turned into a monster. I thought he’d be better than this.” He sighed.
“You know, that just means you still have a chance to show him what it means to be a real man. Not that twisted version he thinks he is.” Butcher added.
Ben sighed and rubbed a hand over his face.
“Yeah, I hope so. But right now, I just want to make sure he doesn’t hurt anyone else...especially Y/n.”
“Then we’ll make sure he doesn’t. One way or another.”
“So, do we have any more Temp V doses left?” Hughie suddenly asked.
Butcher kept his eyes fixed on the road. He didn’t respond immediately.Hughie watched him and tried to understand his mood and sensed something was off.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Butcher let out a frustrated sigh.
“Yeah, we’ve got some.”
“You didn’t sound too sure there. How many do we have?” Hughie asked.
“Enough.” He muttered but the lack of detail only fueled Hughie’s anxiety.
“Enough for what? To take down Homelander?” Hughie pressed.
Butcher shot him a sideways glance.
“Listen, mate, I don’t want to waste it on some half baked plan. We need to be careful with this stuff. We’re not exactly in a position to play around with it.”
“Right. I just thought… if we’re going to face Homelander, we might need every advantage we can get.”
.
As the car rolled up to a small rundown diner nestled along the side of the road, Butcher slowed down and scanned the exterior.
He glanced back at Y/n and Ben in the back seat.
“Right, you two want to come in for a bite?” He asked.
She exchanged a glance with Ben and both of them shook their heads almost simultaneously.
“No, we’ll just stay here.” She replied.
“Yeah, we’re good. Just need a moment.” Ben added.
Butcher looked back at Hughie.who was already starting to open the car door.
“C’mon, Hughie. Let’s grab a quick bite. We’ll be back before they know it."
“Don’t do anything stupid while we’re gone.” Hughie warned half.joking but still serious.
Butcher waved a dismissive hand as he exited the vehicle and the door slammed shut behind him.
He and Hughie walked towards the diner leaving Y/n and Ben alone in the car.
As the diner door swung shut behind Butcher and Hughie, Y/n leaned her head against Ben's shoulder. She closed her eyes for a moment.
“What will happen now? What if... we fail? What if we get separated again?” She whispered.
He placed his hand gently on her back and adjusted her a little closer.
