Charles’s knees buckled as the full weight of the explosion hit him, knocking the wind from his lungs. His ears rang with a high-pitched screech, and the world tilted on its axis. He struggled to stay conscious, the smell of burning wood and gasoline filling his nose. Through the swirling chaos of the fire, Simon’s shadowed figure was nothing but a blurred shape, a dark phantom standing between him and freedom.

“Victor…” The name barely left Charles’s lips, a broken whisper, as he tried to push himself to his feet. His legs wobbled beneath him, his muscles weak from the blast. The boathouse was a raging inferno now, flames devouring everything in their path. The boat—his last hope for escape—was little more than a charred husk, black smoke rising from its remains.

“Do you see it now, Charles?” Simon’s voice was low, menacing, but calm. “Do you understand what’s happening?”

Charles’s heart raced, adrenaline surging through his veins, but there was nowhere to run. He was trapped, the walls of fire closing in around him.
