"Kindness Lost"

Years Ago, Before the Hunter Exam...

The world had never been kind to Hisoka Morow. From a young age, he learned that the strong survived and the weak were swallowed whole by a cruel, unforgiving world. He thrived in the chaos, honing his battle instincts, sharpening his murderous edge. Yet, there was a time when Hisoka wasn't the manipulative, sadistic enigma he would later become.

There was a time when he met her-Y/n Zoldyck.

She wasn't like the rest of her family. Sure, she was strong-perhaps even the strongest of the Zoldycks in some ways-but there was something different about her. She carried herself with a quiet dignity, and beneath the layers of assassin training, there was a softness in her, a light that Hisoka couldn't comprehend.

They had crossed paths during a mission, one that Hisoka was on for pure entertainment, and she for family duty. He had expected to clash with her, to revel in the fight, but instead, something about her stopped him in his tracks. It wasn't her strength, though she had plenty of it. It was something else-an unguarded kindness in her eyes that made him pause.

Over time, Hisoka found himself strangely drawn to her. Y/n had a way of softening the sharp edges of his twisted mind, of making him question the constant violence that fueled him. She didn't judge him for his nature, but rather, she accepted him as he was-an acceptance that no one had ever given him before. She was someone who could see the world's darkness yet chose to face it with a compassionate heart.

"I don't get you," Hisoka had said once, his voice tinged with amusement as they sat by a campfire after a mission they had both completed-though for vastly different reasons. "You're a Zoldyck, yet you're not like them. Why don't you embrace the darkness? It's so much easier."

Y/n smiled softly, her eyes reflecting the flickering flames. "I've seen enough of the darkness, Hisoka. I don't need to become it. Besides, someone has to remind people that there's still light out there."

Hisoka had laughed at that, a real laugh, something he hadn't done in years. "Light, huh? That sounds... boring."

But deep down, it wasn't boring. It was something he hadn't realized he needed.

Their connection grew, and though Hisoka had never imagined himself capable of love, he realized that he felt something for Y/n. It wasn't the same twisted, predatory hunger he felt toward strong opponents-it was deeper, more fragile. He found himself wanting to protect that light inside her, even if he didn't understand why.

But the world wasn't kind to people like Y/n. Her kindness, the very thing that made her unique in Hisoka's eyes, became her undoing.

It happened during a mission. Y/n, ever the compassionate soul, had trusted someone-a former ally from her past life as a Zoldyck who had seemingly turned over a new leaf. Hisoka had warned her, sensing the malice in their so-called ally's aura, but Y/n believed in redemption, believed that people could change.

She was wrong.

They were ambushed. The ally, someone Y/n had spared in the past, had betrayed her, leading her into a trap. Hisoka fought viciously, his bloodlust roaring to the surface as he cut through their enemies. But it was too late. By the time he reached Y/n, she was already lying on the ground, blood pooling around her. Her eyes, still filled with that same kindness, met his as she struggled to breathe.

"Hisoka..." she whispered, her voice weak, yet calm, as if she had accepted her fate. "I'm sorry. I should have listened to you."

Hisoka dropped to his knees beside her, his usual composed expression shattered, replaced by something far more raw. He had never cared about anyone-not like this.

"You shouldn't have trusted them," Hisoka said, his voice low, almost broken. "You shouldn't have been so kind."

She smiled through the pain. "I couldn't help it... I guess I was always too soft for this world."

Her hand reached up, brushing his cheek, and for the first time in his life, Hisoka felt something foreign and terrifying. He felt grief.

"Don't let this world turn you into something you're not," she whispered, before her eyes fluttered shut and her hand fell limp.

The light in her eyes was gone, snuffed out by the cruelty of the world she had refused to become a part of.

After Y/n's death, something inside Hisoka snapped. The part of him that had softened, that had almost been human, shattered completely. He no longer believed in kindness or light. He embraced the darkness Y/n had once tried to keep at bay, letting it consume him. In his eyes, her kindness had been a weakness-a fatal flaw that had cost her everything.

His obsession with power grew, and so did his desire for chaos. But more than anything, he was haunted by the loss of the one person who had seen him for something more than just a monster. And the worst part was, he hadn't been able to protect her.

That failure, that betrayal, drove him deeper into madness. He sought out battles, killing with no remorse, always searching for someone who could give him the thrill that Y/n's presence once had. But no one ever did. His insatiable desire for power masked the emptiness left behind by her death.

Until he met Gon Freecss.

---

The first time Hisoka saw Gon, something inside him stirred. It wasn't just Gon's potential for strength-though that was certainly part of it-it was the look in Gon's eyes. That same spark of kindness, of unwavering belief in the goodness of others. It was the same look Y/n had once given him, the same light she had carried until the world snuffed it out.

Hisoka's fascination with Gon grew quickly, and dangerously. Gon was strong, yes, but it was more than that. Gon reminded him of Y/n. The way Gon trusted his friends, the way he saw the world with bright eyes despite the dangers-Hisoka found himself drawn to it, the way he had once been drawn to Y/n.

But this time, Hisoka didn't want to protect that light.

He wanted to test it. He wanted to see how far Gon's kindness could go before the world broke him, just as it had broken Y/n. Would Gon survive in a world that devoured the kind-hearted? Or would he fall, just as Y/n had?

His obsession wasn't just with Gon's strength. It was with his spirit-his goodness. Hisoka wanted to see that light shatter, wanted to be there when it happened. But at the same time, he couldn't help but admire it, the way he had once admired Y/n.

And so, Hisoka watched, waited, and followed Gon, caught in a twisted dance of obsession, longing, and the remnants of the person he used to be. Gon's kindness was a mirror, reflecting the past Hisoka had buried deep inside, and he both hated and desired to see that reflection.

In the end, Gon was everything Y/n had been, and more. But Hisoka would never let himself feel that same vulnerability again. Instead, he would test Gon, push him to his limits, and perhaps, in the chaos of their battles, he might find a way to reconcile the past that haunted him.

Or he would break Gon, and finally destroy the part of himself that had once cared.
