"no one deserves you,
yeah, you're mine.
only with you i feel alive,
if you leave me here, i'll die."
- Stay, Ari Abdul╳
"Let me be what I'm meant to be."
Frank's words play on my mind repeatedly, his statement resonating with me. Only, I don't know what I'm meant to be. Because what I be, is unnatural.
Identity crisis aside, Frank and I remain silently civil for the next few days. I get him his coffee and feed him, while he's polite and respectful towards me.
I help him and Curtis narrow down Billy's whereabouts, listening to police chatter on Frank's radio, for any robberies or hits that are linked to Billy and his goons. But I only help them from inside the trailer. Frank won't let me outside.
One day, out of sheer boredom, I use a bit of map we no longer need to make a paper crane.
Frank watches as I play with the finished product. His whole energy softens and I can tell he's about to say something. I steal a glance and see him smiling to himself, eyes on the folded paper in my hands.
He proceeds tells me a story of how his daughter had to make paper cranes for a school friend who was sick. One thousand paper cranes. Lisa loved the project and went and bought all different sorts of paper, coloured and patterned, to make each one different for the girl that would be receiving them. The cranes were passed on to the girl, and that night at the dinner table, Frank Jr was laughing about the fact he'd made a paper dinosaur, and slipped it in amongst all the cranes.
I giggle at his story while Frank chuckles at the sweet memory.
I love it when he speaks of his family. A serene happiness befalls his demeanour, his face and deep in his eyes. Watching him access a peaceful and pleasant moment of his life warms my heart.
I hand him my little crane, and try to ignore the annoying flushing of my cheeks when his fingertips graze across my hand. As he looks at me, I notice an affection in Frank's eyes that hasn't been present for some time.
