⸻ chapter nineteen : the divide

THE SMIRNOV PENTHOUSE WAS A battleground of emotions, each corner heavy with the weight of unresolved conflict. Satalia and Luka had returned home expecting a strained but manageable reconciliation, but the atmosphere was charged with hostility and division.

The family was gathered in the spacious living room, but the tension was palpable. Satalia stood with Luka by her side, their hands intertwined as they faced the gathered family members. Her father's stern expression was matched by her siblings' scowls, while her mother, usually the peacemaker, looked torn.

"You can't be fucking serious about this," Satalia's father, Sevastian, bellowed, his frustration evident. "You've already caused enough trouble. It's time for you and Luka to get the hell out of here. You can't stay here under these circumstances."

Satalia's jaw tightened. "I'm not going anywhere. This is my home, and I'm not going to let you control my life."

Sevastian's eyes narrowed. "You think you're being brave, but you're just being fucking reckless. Luka's presence here is making everything worse. You need to think about your safety and the impact on the family."

Her brother, Vasya, sneered. "This whole fucking situation has put us all at risk. If you and Luka can't follow the rules, then you need to leave. We have a reputation to protect."

Her sister, Natalya, crossed her arms. "You're being selfish, Satalia. This isn't just about you. It's about all of us. You've dragged us into your shit, and now you need to deal with the consequences."

Satalia's voice rose with anger. "This is my life, not a game for you to control. I'm not going to let you dictate my choices or push Luka away just because it's inconvenient for you."

Her mother, Svetlana, finally spoke up, her voice strained but firm. "Viktor, this isn't right. Satalia has fought for her freedom and happiness. We can't just turn our backs on her now. Luka has been a part of her life, and we need to support them, not push them away."

Sevastian's face reddened with anger. "This isn't about support, Lana. It's about safety and practicality. We can't just ignore the danger they're bringing into our lives."

Svetlana's gaze was steady. "And what about family loyalty? What about standing by our daughter when she needs us the most?"

The argument reached a fever pitch, with everyone shouting over each other. Satalia's siblings continued to hurl accusations, while Sevastian and Lana's disagreement became more heated. Luka stood silently beside Satalia, his face a mask of controlled anger.

"You think you know what's best for me?" Satalia yelled, tears of frustration in her eyes. "You don't get to decide my life or my future. I'm not leaving Luka or backing down."

Sevastian's voice was thunderous. "If you won't listen to reason, then you're making this harder for everyone. Luka needs to go back to his fucking apartment. We'll handle this in a way that's best for the family."

Satalia's heart sank at the ultimatum. "What? No! You can't just separate us like that."

Sevastian's decision was final. "I'm not negotiating this. Luka, you need to pack up and go back to your place. Satalia will stay here with us, and we'll figure out how to manage this situation."

Satalia's anger boiled over. "This isn't fair! You're making him the fucking scapegoat for everything. I'm not staying here without him. If you're going to make this decision, then you're forcing me to leave too."

As the argument continued, the tension in the room was unbearable. The divide in the Smirnov family was now unmistakable, with Satalia and Luka on one side and the rest of the family on the other.

The twist came when Svetlana, her face a mix of resolve and sadness, stepped between Sevastian and Satalia. "Sev, I can't just stand by and watch you tear our family apart. Satalia has always been strong, and if she's chosen Luka, then we need to respect that. I'll stand by her, even if it means going against you."

Sevastian's face was a mask of shock and anger, but Elena's decision was clear. She took Satalia's hand, offering a semblance of solidarity in the midst of chaos. "We'll work this out, but not by pushing Luka away or forcing Satalia to choose between us and him."

As Sevastian's rage reached its peak, he stormed out of the room, leaving the remaining family members in a state of stunned silence. Satalia's siblings looked on with mixed emotions, while Svetlana tried to offer comfort to her daughter.

Luka's voice was low and grim as he spoke to Satalia. "I'll go back to my place, but we need to find a way to work through this. I'm not giving up on us, no matter what they throw at us."

Satalia nodded, her heart heavy but determined. "I won't either. We'll get through this, and we'll show them that our love is stronger than any obstacle they throw in our way."

As Luka prepared to leave, the weight of the situation was heavy on both of them. The road ahead was fraught with challenges, but their resolve to stay together was unwavering. The battle for their love and future was far from over, and they were ready to face whatever came next, united in their fight for freedom and happiness.
