I walk up to the cafe's front door and breathe out a sigh before entering inside, as I look around I finally see him sitting on our favorite spot.He finally looked up from his phone and waved his hand at me, I smiled and walked up to him.
"How have you been?" Minghao asked.
"I'm doin' good, it's great to see you." I replied as I sat down.
Lie through my teeth and out my mouth...
"That's good to hear then, anyways I've ordered your caramel macchiato drink so, you don't have to." He said with his usual gummy smile.
"Thank you, Hao. You're the best." I replied.
I know it's something we all go through but, it seems like everybody else has got it figured out.
I sat there as I listened to my friend, Minghao, talk about all of his traveling activities that he had been so busy about these past few months.
My drink finally came and I thanked the waiter then continued chatting with Minghao.
If I'm too honest, I'll ruin the mood.
I'm reading my lines, and I wait for the cue."What about you, munch? What have you been up to lately?" He asked.
"Oh, nothing much. Just the usual." I replied as I took a sip from my drink.
Hate bein' a liar, but I'm scared of the truth, so...
"Oh, you haven't met up with our other friends? You know, they've been going around the town for quite a while." He said confused.
"Uhm..no, I haven't had much time to uhmm..go out and meet up with them." I replied as I looked at him.
You'd never know all the places that my mind goes...
"I see... But, wanna go with me to the museum after here?" He asked.
"Sure." I replied half-heartedly.
When it's late and nobody's home to watch me put on my one man show...
As we finished our drinks, Minghao paid for it and we both headed out then went to our favorite museum that is just nearby this area, I walk side by side with him as he tells me more stories about how his travel went.
You'd never see all the times I swear I can't breathe...
Cause I smile while suffocatin', I take a bow as the curtains close..."I hate this one man show..." I mumble.
"Did you say something?" He asked.
I looked up to him when I realized that we both had stopped with him in front of me with his worried face.
"No, uhmm..I'm just..trying to..uhmm..rehearse. Yeah, rehearse." I replied awkwardly.
"For... What?" He asked.
"For uhmm..the play. Yeah, the play at school." I replied as I scratched the back of my neck.
"It's a big one, lots of lines to memorize. I'm trying to get them down before the first rehearsal." My fingers traced the familiar grooves, a nervous habit I hadn't realized I'd picked up.
Got it good acting like everything is fine...
"Okay. Anyways, I know it's not true but I won't push it. Let's just get inside, it's so cold here outside." He replied.
He gave me a quick, reassuring smile before turning and heading towards the museum entrance.
I fake a smile so you will think that I'm alright...
I followed him, the warmth of the building a welcome relief.
As we stepped inside, the cool air of the museum greeted us, a stark contrast to the biting wind outside.
I took a deep breath, trying to let go of the tension that had been tightening my shoulders.
"So, what's the play about?" Minghao asked, his voice echoing slightly in the grand hall.
"It's a... a modern interpretation of a classic," I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
I won't let you see what's going on inside...
"It's about... well, it's about finding your voice." I added.
I knew it wasn't exactly a truthful answer, but it was a start.
And maybe, just maybe, if I kept repeating it, it would start to feel a little bit more real.
"Sounds interesting." Minghao said, his eyes scanning the exhibits.
"I'm sure you'll do great." He added, with a proud smile.
His words were a balm to my soul, a small flicker of warmth in the vast, cool space.
"Thanks..." I mumbled, feeling a little less like a fraud, a little more like myself.
Don't wanna die, but it's so hard being alive...
We spent the next hour exploring the museum, the silence of the exhibits punctuated by Minghao's enthusiastic commentary and my quiet observations.
As we moved from room to room, I felt a small sliver of peace settle within me.
You'd never know all the places that my mind goes...
Maybe, just maybe, I was starting to believe my own lies.
Oh, I hope that somebody's home so I can end this one man show...
Or maybe, I was just learning how to live with them.
You'd never see all the times I swear I can't breathe...
Cause I smile while suffocating, I take a bow as the curtains close...
