The night was still and cold when we left the gala. The stars hung low in the sky, barely visible through the glow of the city lights. Alejandra and I slipped into the back of the car, her hand still in mine, lingering a moment longer than necessary. There was something in her touch that made my pulse race, a quiet urgency that I couldn't quite place.
She leaned back against the leather seat, her eyes half-closed, lost in thought. I watched her in the dim light, the way the shadows played across her face, the softness of her lips, the curve of her neck. She looked beautiful, serene, but I knew there was more beneath the surface. There always was with Alejandra.
"Where to?" I asked, my voice cutting through the silence.
"My place," she replied without hesitation, her voice steady. "I think we could both use a drink."
I nodded, giving the driver a quick glance to let him know where to go. The car pulled away from the curb, the city lights blurring past as we made our way through the quiet streets. I turned to look at Alejandra, still lost in her own world. There was a tension between us, something unspoken hanging in the air, thick and heavy. I felt it in my chest, a tightness that wouldn't ease.
"You're quiet," I said after a while, breaking the silence.
She opened her eyes and turned to face me, a small smile playing at her lips. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
"About you," she admitted softly, her gaze never wavering. "About tonight. About everything."
I raised an eyebrow, curious. "What about me?"
She hesitated for a moment, then reached out, placing her hand on my knee. Her touch was warm, electric, sending a shock of heat through my body. "You've surprised me, Nikolai," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I thought I had you figured out, but... tonight, I saw a different side of you."
I smirked, leaning back in my seat. "You think you know me?"
She leaned in closer, her lips inches from mine. "I think I'm starting to," she whispered, her breath hot against my skin.
For a moment, I considered closing the distance between us, kissing her right there in the car. But there was something in her eyes that held me back—a glint of something dark, something almost... dangerous. Instead, I took her hand in mine, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Let's see where the night takes us," I said softly, my voice thick with emotion.
She nodded, her gaze lingering on mine for a moment longer before she pulled back, settling against the seat once more. The rest of the ride was quiet, a charged silence that buzzed with unspoken words. When we finally arrived at her place, the driver opened the door, and I stepped out, offering her my hand to help her out of the car.
"Thank you," she said quietly, her fingers lingering in mine for a moment longer than necessary.
As we walked into Alejandra's apartment, the warmth of the place immediately wrapped around us. The gala had been exhausting, and I felt a strange mixture of relief and tension slipping into my muscles. Alejandra led me to the kitchen, where she grabbed a bottle of whiskey and poured two glasses, sliding one over to me.
