The morning light filtered through the dense canopy of trees, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. I took a deep breath, letting the crisp air fill my lungs. The scent of pine and earth grounded me, but my thoughts were already racing with the enormity of our task.*We need to find those Starfire Blooms,* my wolf, Mira, reminded me, her voice echoing in my mind. *They're the first step, and we can't afford to waste time.*
*I know,* I replied, scanning the area as the others started to stir from their sleep. The night had been uneventful, thankfully, but sleep had been elusive. My mind kept drifting to the dangers ahead, to the fate of my sister, and to the strange bond I was feeling more and more with Killian.
Killian was already up, standing a few feet away with his back to me, his eyes scanning the forest like a sentry. He hadn't said much since we set up camp last night, but the tension in his shoulders told me he was just as anxious as I was. I wondered if he felt the same pull I did when we were near each other, but now wasn't the time to dwell on that. There were more pressing matters.
"We need to get moving," I said, breaking the silence as I stood up, brushing off the leaves from my pants. "The sooner we find those Starfire Blooms, the better."
The others nodded, gathering their gear. Liam, with his calm demeanor and steady hands, was already checking his weapons. Elena was sharpening her blades, her focus as sharp as ever. Marcus, though young, was full of energy and determination. Aria and Theo exchanged a few words, their expressions set with resolve.
Killian turned to face us, his intense gray eyes meeting mine for a brief moment before he addressed the group. "Remember, we're looking for a flower with a scent like happiness. They grow at the roots of ancient trees. Stay alert, and if you find one, mind-link the rest of us immediately."
*I can almost smell them already,* Mira said, her excitement bubbling over. *Let's go!*
I nodded, and with a final glance at Killian, we all split up, fanning out into the forest. The trees here were massive, their trunks wide and gnarled, with roots that twisted and turned like a maze beneath the forest floor. I kept my senses sharp, trying to pick up any unusual scents or signs of the flowers we were searching for.
As I moved deeper into the forest, the air grew cooler, and the light dimmed. The trees here were older, their branches intertwining high above, blocking out much of the sky. This was the kind of place where ancient things lived, where time seemed to stand still.
*Do you think we'll find them?* I asked Mira, my footsteps soft on the moss-covered ground.
*We have to,* she replied, her tone more serious now. *It's the only way to strengthen the seal. Without those blooms, we're just delaying the inevitable.*
The thought made my stomach twist. I couldn't bear the idea of losing Lila, of the world being plunged into darkness because we failed. I pushed the thought away and focused on the task at hand. I had to trust that we would find what we needed.
After what felt like hours of searching, I came across a massive tree, its roots spreading out in all directions like the fingers of a giant. The bark was rough, covered in patches of moss and lichen, and there was a sense of age about it, as if this tree had stood here since the dawn of time.
*This could be it,* Mira whispered.
I approached the base of the tree, brushing away some leaves to get a better look. The scent of earth and wood filled my nose, but there was something else—something sweeter, lighter, almost like the feeling you get when you laugh with friends or see a beautiful sunrise. I knelt down, following the scent, and there it was—a single, delicate flower nestled among the roots.
*That's it!* Mira said, her excitement palpable. *We found one!*
I quickly mind-linked the others. *I've found one, by an ancient tree west of the camp. Keep looking for more, but come here to see it so we know exactly what we're searching for.*
Killian was the first to arrive, his eyes locking onto the flower immediately. He knelt beside me, his presence steadying me in a way I didn't quite understand. He reached out to gently touch the bloom, and for a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath.
