“Anni,” I called out to my sister, who was deeply engrossed in her papers and documents.
We’d finished dinner half an hour ago, yet I still couldn’t bring myself to talk to her about the relocation to Mumbai. My stomach twisted with anxiety, unsure of how she’d react. She’d obviously try to stop me from going, and truthfully, I wasn’t eager to return to that place either. But the Director’s words echoed in my mind, and the thought of disappointing her weighed heavily on me.
Besides, the company we’d be collaborating with was reputed and highly sought after—everyone would kill for an opportunity like this. And here I was, hesitating. How ungrateful of me! But my hesitation wasn’t about the company—it was about the place.
“Give me ten minutes, Kavu. I’m almost done,” she asked, not looking up from her work. The patience required to hold this inside was wearing me thin, burning me from within.
Anni was surrounded by stacks of legal documents, a sight I’d grown accustomed to over the years, yet it never failed to make me uneasy. She didn’t deserve these late nights and the stress that came with them. Although she excelled at her job, I couldn’t help but worry about her well-being. She always brushed it off, saying,‘Being a corporate lawyer isn’t a risky job,’ but I knew better. I remember how she managed everything when we shifted to Bangalore, 2 years back. She is older than me, but it never felt like it because we’re more like best friends.
She maintained a facade of being laid-back, but I could see the worry lines that crept into her expressions when she thought no one was looking. Her fiery temper and no-nonsense attitude often led us into awkward situations. She never hesitated to speak her mind, regardless of who was on the receiving end. Despite her sometimes rude exterior, there was always a soft corner hidden within her. We had our endless fights, teasing each other mercilessly, but by the end of the day, we’d always be cuddling, as if nothing had happened. We were total opposites, yet our bond was unbreakable.
“Where’s Chiku?” I asked, frowning in confusion when I realised our little troublemaker wasn’t around. Normally, Chiku was always vying for attention when I was busy, yet here I was, with nothing to do, and she was nowhere to be found.
“She’s sleeping; she was too tired after playing with Ruby,” Anni replied. I scoffed at her response as if playing was a tough job.
“Don’t do that; she’s just a baby,” she cooed, making me roll my eyes and pull a face.
