Over the next couple of weeks, I began to notice several changes within the team. For one, Jay and Nya had begun to spend more time together, and Jay would usually take her to lunch or somewhere fun. I personally shipped them together. I mean, they had become the best of friends and had great chemistry together. They found out that they had quite a few things in common. Both of them enjoyed learning about technology and stuff. They also were complete opposites in several ways. I always found Nya a bit serious, but Jay's sense of humor was a perfect complement to her solemn nature. It was as if they were Yin and Yang, two opposites united in one whole.
Jay and Nya were growing so much closer, though I was unsure what Kai's opinion of their relationship was. I was just happy that Kai had even started to get along with me. I don't know why, but he was starting to be nicer and giving me better tips on how to be a good Ninja. The other Ninja followed suit after his attitude changed towards me. Although I was their formal leader, most of them looked up to Kai as if he was of the same rank as me, or perhaps even greater. In all honesty, Kai probably would have become the Green Ninja if I had not. Or at least that was what the other Ninja perceived. I had no idea that the team considered arrogance and a cocky attitude ideal leadership qualities.
After I assured Jay that I was not into Nya, we began to spend more time together as well. I don't think I needed to confirm it, though, because I guess he figured out how I had sacrificed owning the limited edition copy of Fritz Donnegan's comic Starfarer so that Nya could give it to him. Well, whatever happened, it worked. Sometimes, when the both of us had free time, he would take me to Mother Doomsday's Comic Store to look at any new releases. My relationships with the Ninja were growing stronger by the minute. I believed that they had grown to trust me over the couple of months I had spent with them. They now accepted me as a member of the team, and, one day, maybe I could even get them to respect me as their leader.
On the second week of August, school began, and I soon had to balance my schoolwork and my training as the Green Ninja. Master Wu finally returned from whatever "errand" he was running, though I suspected that his errand had something to do with my mother. I had very little recollection of her, but I just knew that she had abandoned me at an orphanage called Darkley's Boarding School for Bad Boys. The school was dedicated to teaching small boys, such as myself, the qualities of a "good" villain, indoctrinating them to think what they were doing was right, when it most clearly was not. They were being shaped into the next generation's overlords. I mean what would you expect if your children were being taught by skeletons of the underworld who had been previous generals of Garmadon? I am referring to Kruncha and Nuckal of course.
Although Master Wu tried to assure me that the only reason my mother had ever left me was only done in the hope of my protection, I sensed that even he doubted what he was saying. I bet he had absolutely no idea what my mother's intentions were. All I knew was that, if I ever did meet her again, I wouldn't call her Mom. In fact, I would tell her to her face how bad of a parent she had been. I mean, who leaves their child at a boarding school for almost ten years? I didn't even know what her justifications were, and I believe that neither did my uncle for that matter.
Unlike the Ninja, who could care less about the grades in school, Uncle Wu enforced the rule of balancing between schoolwork and the duties of the Green Ninja. He was a firm believer that I had to exercise my body as well as my mind. I attended Ninjago High, one of the only two high schools in Ninjago City. The other one was a private school, and definitely was for far more affluent people, as it was located in the most prosperous areas in all of Ninjago. I heard that even the daughter of the highly esteemed Mayor Jade attended that school. I was pretty content with the public school I was in, though, as the other four Ninja and Nya were at the school as well.
