The moon was high above the horizon, casting a pale glow over the Dragon's Edge, where the dragon riders had gathered around the central hearth. The flames danced in the cool night air, their flickering light illuminating the serious expressions of the group. Hiccup stood at the edge of the gathering, his arms crossed, deep in thought. Toothless was beside him, the dragon's large eyes reflecting the firelight, while Astrid sat close, her hand resting on Stormfly's back.
The events on the island of the Defenders of the Wing were still fresh in everyone's minds. The warlords had shown their hand, albeit weakly, and it was clear that this was only the beginning. Hiccup knew that they had to act quickly and decisively, but the path forward was anything but clear.
"We need a plan," Snotlout said, breaking the silence. He was seated on a log, his hands gesturing animatedly. "We can't just wait around for these warlords to pick us off one by one."
Fishlegs nodded in agreement, his face thoughtful. "Snotlout's right. The warlords are divided now, but they're still dangerous. If they manage to unite, they'll be a force we can't ignore."
"I say we take the fight to them," Ruffnut suggested, a mischievous grin on her face. "Hit them before they have a chance to regroup."
Tuffnut, sitting beside her, nodded vigorously. "Yeah, surprise them with a dragon ambush! They won't know what hit them!"
Hiccup listened to his friends, their voices blending together in a mix of concern and eagerness for action. He could feel the weight of responsibility pressing down on him. As the leader of the dragon riders, it was up to him to make the decisions that would shape their future, and the future of the entire archipelago. He glanced at Astrid, who was watching him with those steady, blue eyes of hers. Her calm presence was a source of strength for him, especially in moments like this.
"Attacking the warlords might be the right move," Hiccup said, his voice measured. "But we need to be smart about it. We can't just rush in without knowing what we're up against. We need information—scouting reports, intelligence on their numbers, their strengths and weaknesses."
"Maybe we can use our alliances to gather intel," Fishlegs suggested. "The Wingmaidens, the Berserkers, and the Defenders of the Wing could help us keep an eye on the warlords' movements."
"Good idea, Fishlegs," Hiccup agreed. "We'll need to coordinate with them. But we also have to be careful not to spread ourselves too thin. We can't afford to leave Berk or Dragon's Edge undefended."
"Then we'll need to set up some kind of rotation," Astrid said, her voice thoughtful. "We can have some of us stay back to protect our homes while the others are out gathering information or preparing for potential strikes. It'll take careful planning, but it's doable."
Hiccup nodded, appreciating Astrid's practical approach. "That makes sense. We'll need to work out the details, but I think it's our best option for now. We can't just sit back and hope the warlords don't target us again. We have to be proactive."
"But what if they manage to unite?" Snotlout asked, his tone serious. "What if they bring their armies together and come at us all at once?"
Hiccup frowned, the thought troubling him. "If that happens, we'll need to rely on our alliances more than ever. We can't fight them alone, but together, with all of our allies, we might stand a chance. The key will be keeping them divided, playing on their distrust of each other."
"Divide and conquer," Tuffnut said, nodding sagely. "Classic strategy."
"Exactly," Hiccup replied. "Wait how do you know- Ugh nevermind. We need to exploit the fact that they don't trust each other. We can use that to our advantage, but we'll have to be careful. If we push too hard, we might drive them into each other's arms."
