CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
parting ways

I had a Mikaelson on either side of me as I walked through the streets of Chicago. I was too much of an introvert to ever live in a city but I still enjoyed visiting them every now and then. The amount of people that lived in cities meant that there was always plenty more entertainment than where I lived.

"I absolutely adore ballet!" Rebekah gushed as we left the theater, "I would watch it every day if I could."

"I imagine that doing so would get boring rather fast." Henrik mused, earning an eye roll from sister.

"What did you think of the ballet, Morgana?" Rebekah asked and I exchanged a look with Henrik.

"It was... good?" I said and Henrik chuckled at Rebekah's expression.

"You didn't like it?" She gasped, playfully nudging my side, "Oh, Morgana, what am I going to do with you?"

"Back in England, Morgana and I used to go to escape rooms every now and then." Henrik said and Rebekah tilted her head in confusion.

"What the bloody hell is an escape room?"

"It's where you get locked in a room and you have to solve puzzles to get out!" Henrik grinned and his sister's face slowly morphed into a look of horror.

"You allowed our mate to be locked in a room?"

"It's just for fun, Bekah, they let you out after an hour if you don't manage to escape." Henrik explained and I chuckled in amusement.

"And you do that for fun?" Rebekah asked doubtfully and my other mates nodded enthusiastically. The blonde vampire sighed as she hooked an arm through mine, "Poor Morgana, you've been surrounded by men for far too long. It's about time that you learnt the touch of a woman."

I shivered and her eyes lit up in delight as Henrik chuckled at us. We slowly made our way back to our hotel, stopping to look in various shops along the way. I had never been much of a shopper but Rebekah was buzzing with excitement. When we finally arrived back in our hotel room with several bags in tow, Elijah and Klaus stood in the center of the living room. They looked to have been engrossed in a tense conversation.

I looked between them nervously, "What is it?"

Klaus smiled warmly as he approached me and took my hands in his. I narrowed my eyes at him, since I was still yet to forgive him for what he said to me.

"We're going back to Mystic Falls." He declared and my face dropped.

"No." I told him point blank as I crossed my arms over my chest.

"What?" Klaus' smile fell.

"I don't want to go back to Mystic Falls." I told him and he shook his head in frustration.

"Why don't you want to go to Mystic Falls?" He asked and I let out a humorless laugh.

"Because all that town brings is chaos. I got kidnapped twice, remember?"

"Trevor and Damon Salvatore have been dealt with." Elijah reminded me but I shook my head.

"All the more reason for people to seek vengeance." I scoffed, "Do you really think that Stefan Salvatore will allow the death of his brother and the love of his life to go unavenged? So then, you'll have to kill Stefan, who no doubt has friends of his own to avenge him. It's an endless cycle, Klaus."

"This is why I need my hybrids," He replied, "They will make our family more powerful and protect us from harm. Love, the witch that Rebekah and I went to see told us that we would find our answers about my failed hybrids in Mystic Falls."

"Then you go to Mystic Falls!" I argued, feeling the weight of Henrik's hand settle on my shoulder in comfort, "I don't have to go with you!"

"I'm not leaving you behind, Morgana," Klaus practically growled, "I have only just found you and I am not letting you go."

"Niklaus, maybe we should discuss this-" Elijah began but I spoke over him.

"If you care about me in even the slightest way, you won't make me go back to that godforsaken town!" I told him and his eyes softened.

“Nik, you can't force her!” Rebekah argued on my behalf.

"Where would she even go?" He said quietly, releasing my hands and taking a step back.

I looked towards Henrik with a small smile, "To our home, in England."

I hugged Rebekah tightly, hating that I was about to be separated from my newly found mate so soon. We both understood why we had to temporarily part ways. I needed to go back to my old familiar life and work on myself whilst she helped Klaus achieve his goals.

"I'll call you on the phone every day." I promised and she smiled tearfully.

"Only if I can work out how to use the damn thing." she joked and I grinned.

"You'll learn, you're a very smart woman, Rebekah."

I moved away from the blonde and into Elijah's awaiting arms. With the exception of Henrik, he was the Mikaelson I knew the best and I had gotten extremely used to his presence in my life. I held onto him, burying my face in his white shirt and memorizing the feel of him.

"If you need anything, anything at all, give me a call and I'll be on the first flight." He urged me as I regretfully pulled away from him.

"I will," I assured him, lifting up on tiptoes to press a chaste kiss to his lips.

"Morgana," Klaus said and I turned to face him. He looked down at me fondly, guilt flashing in his eyes, "I'm sorry, Morgana, about everything. I promise that I will strive to become the mate you deserve. When I see you next, I hope that we can have a fresh start."

After a moment of thought, I slowly nodded and carefully wrapped my arms around him. I was a big believer in giving second chances to those that deserved them and I had a feeling that Klaus would fight to be worthy of one.

When I pulled away, Henrik grabbed my hand and squeezed it gently. I smiled sadly at Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah, tears threatening to spill from my eyes. I didn't want to be parted from them but I knew that it was the best decision for all parties involved.

Just like me, the Mikaelsons also faced trauma that they needed to work though before they could fully commit to a relationship.

I forced my feet to move as Henrik led me to the taxi that would take us to the airport. After we had climbed into the vehicle, I looked out the window at my mates, who stood solemnly on the pavement. When I looked at Henrik, I realized that he was also holding back tears.

I snuggled into his side as we drove off.

"It's just you and me, Henrik," I said tearfully, "Just like old times."

I had a feeling that when we reunited with the Mikaelsons once more, we would all be very different people.
