Kuldeep Yadav, the chinaman bowler was sitting in his room alone. His eyes stuck on a post on Instagram. His eyes move up and down as he rereads the caption the 4th time. He looks up at the photo above the caption, his heart flutters. Holding the trophy with a wide grin is his teammate, roommate and best friend Ravindra Jadeja and underneath his photo is the caption of his retirement.Kuldeep feels a sinking feeling in his heart. He knew that Rohit and Virat bhai were taking their retirement but he had no idea about this. 'Did the others know?' He thought. Jadeja had not even asked or even informed him about this major decision of his life. Maybe he was not that important in Jadeja's life as he thought. Maybe not that good a friend. Maybe he overestimated their closeness. Maybe he was a pity friend.
He lifted his head to look at the left side of his bed. The one where his roommate layer last night. He remembered due to the excitement of winning the World Cup both of them were unable to sleep. They talked for hours while staring at the ceiling about their likes, dislikes, future opportunities. Jadeja never mentioned his retirement to him. Kuldeep felt a pang in his heart.
Yuzi, his best friend who was criminally left out of so many series and now jaddu's retirement meant that he was gonna be all alone. He had other seniors and juniors of course but not the two people he felt who understood him best in the world. He felt the tears building in his eyes asking permission to escape.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. He knew what it was about. All the teammates had decided to meet in the common area, someone was here to call him. He knew jaddu is going to be there. He had to control himself from jumping on him, from asking him about his decision, from crying in front of him, from creating a scene. He had no rights of questioning someone who doesn't consider him a friend.
He quickly looked at the mirror to hide any hints of sadness on his face and put on a fake smile. He opened the door to be greeted by a beaming Yashasvi."What were you doing bhai? Come on. Jaddu bhai is waiting for his teasing partner eagerly. Nobody is agreeing with him so he asked me to call you." Said Yashasvi. 'Teasing partner' thought Kuldeep. ' does one hide such important decisions of life from a partner? It is a pity friendship'
He entered the room while talking with Yashasvi. Jaddu beamed on seeing Kuldeep and eagerly patted to the bean bag beside him that he had saved for him. Kuldeep saw this but decided to ignore him as he walked to sit between Rishabh and Yuzi. Yuzi greeted him by fondly putting his hand around Kul's neck and pulling him closer. This cute moment extracted several 'awws' from the room.
"What were all of you discussing " Kul asked
"Where we all want to go before returning to India." Axar answered
"We were thinking beach but jaddu insisted on the sword museum. What do you think?" Virat asked
"Let's go the museum. Please Kul." Jaddu said while looking at Kuldeep earnestly.Kuldeep looked at jaddu with his earnest look and childlike enthusiasm. They made him weak. But he could not fall weak anymore. Not when he is going to be alone.
"Let's go to the beach" he said.
Jaddu looked at him surprised. First Kuldeep had ignored the seat right next to him for which he had fought with Rohit and chose to sit in the crammed space between Rishabh and Yuzi and now this. Kuldeep was always on his side no matter whether he was wrong or right.
'Did I do something wrong' thought JadejaYuzi on the other hand saw right through Kuldeep's facade. 'What's wrong?' He whisper screamed to his bestie. 'Nothing' Kuldeep answered back. Yuzi decided to confront him in his room after everyone sleeps. He saw how disturbed Kul looked the whole time.
