06 - you greedy kids finally get some lore

Start from the beginning

The brunette nodded slightly, her gaze moving to the water before them. "Your memories will come back, I think," she murmured, her head tilting slightly as she spoke. Her hair fell over her shoulder in a dark curtain, a strand above her ear flashing bright for a moment in the fading light. Looking back over to him, Mabel continued, "Maybe you just need something to set them off."

Percy nodded slowly, his fingers tightening on hers for a moment. "Yeah," he whispered, watching her hazel eyes catch the light of golden hour, highlighting flecks of green and gold and amber. "Maybe."

Mabel didn't really know what to say, so she looked back out at the water, sitting comfortably in the warm silence between them. It was a safe, soft thing, like they knew that neither of them needed to say anything to fill in the gaps— the quiet said what they couldn't.

A laugh echoed behind the two, making them glance back at the younger teens sitting behind them. Frank was covered in what looked like cracker crumbs, his face red with embarrassment, while Hazel had her head thrown back in a loud laugh, the fading light bouncing off her golden curls. Mabel's lips twitched up at the sight; those two kids were some of her favorite people to ever walk this planet.

Percy turned back to the front, his swirling eyes scanning the shoreline. They passed along Stinson Beach, the light sand stark against the green hills, a single mountain rising above them on the horizon. The son of Neptune pointed with his free hand. "That looks familiar," he told them, something of a question in his words.

Mabel's face hardened, her fingers flexing in Percy's grip for a moment. That mountain carried bad memories, sharp moments from the past that dug at the pit of her stomach like knives. She regarded the landmark with a wary stare, a part of her wondering if old foes would make appearances.

Frank's gaze turned careful as he glanced at the older girl before replying. "Mount Tam. Kids at camp... they talk about it. A big battle happened on the summit, at the old Titan base." Mabel's stomach churned with anger and that lingering fear that seemed to live there now, like a dormant snake in the pit of her gut.

His brows pulling down, Percy frowned like this seemed vaguely familiar. "Were you guys there?" he asked.

Shaking her head, Hazel murmured, "Not us. That was before we got to camp. But," she paused, eyeing Mabel like she wasn't sure if she should bring it up, before continuing, "...Mabel was there."

The son of Neptune's eyes turned to the girl beside him, catching the downturn of her lips and the unfocused glaze of her hazel eyes. His voice was gentler when he spoke. "You were?"

Mabel nodded mindlessly, humming under her breath. "Yeah. It was..." the brunette paused, her lips pulling down as she tried to search for the right words. "We stormed the palace that Saturn had built— the legion took down probably a million monsters." Pursing her lips, her thumb absent-mindedly brushed back and forth across the back of Percy's hand. "Jason and I... we challenged Krios— like a couple of fucking idiots." A soft laugh slipped from her lips, a bitter undertone sitting just beneath her twitching lips. "Don't do hand-to-hand with a Titan. It's not that fun."

Percy managed to look mildly impressed though his frown deepened slightly. "Yeah..." he murmured beneath his breath. "I can imagine." Something in his voice seemed to say that maybe he really could imagine; maybe his missing memories held a similar experience.

It grew quiet again, only the soft hum of the hull beneath them and the soft whistle of the breeze over the waves breaking the silence. Mabel glanced over at the boy beside her, studying his features in the last light of dusk. He looked familiar, like she'd seen all of his features somewhere before, but never together, on one face. The curve of his jaw, the slope of his nose, they were all things she had seen before. And his eyes held this strange, heavy sadness that she knew all too well— the wondering if fighting was really what she wanted to do; the wondering if this fight would be her last.
