With the disastrous counter attack accross the Golden Gate Bridge having ended in an utter rout the coast of California rapidly fell to the demon hordes with most national guard and militia retreating as far as Vegas in some sectors.
The last coastal city in California to fall was Dan Diego which fell on the early morning of the 13th. The state capital Sacramento now find itself in danger of encirclement as unchecked hordes of demons advance on all fronts of the state.
No response from the president had been heard and with each hour the United States national guards moral drops.
United States of America. California. Near Fairfield On route 80 to Sacramento. November 13th. 1918.
"Good grief what happened to Vallejo." Said Colonel Hutson as he looked through his binoculars at the burning town of Vallejo from one of the hastily made observation posts on hills that dotted the landscape.
"We got ambushed by the creatures sir. The Militia on our right and left flanks bugged out. I reckon those creatures had already taken the town and were just waiting for unsuspecting victims to walk through it." Said Lt Patterson as he bandaged his wounded head.
The Colonel sighed. "There goes any hope of stopping those things from reaching the Sacramento River. Let's hope they don't know how to make boats or swim. How many men do we have at our disposal?" The colonel asked.
"Reckon about 600 or so most are militia though. We also have no artillery or machine guns. We would have more had we not lost some 100 men in the ambush at Vallejo." The Lt said, trying to straighten out his dirty uniform.
"Any news from the south." He asked the telegrams officer.
"The lines seem to have been cut so we have no idea about our men to the north or south. We did get word that the news reached Sacramento and that a defense is being prepared." The telegrams officer said.
Colonel Hutson looked over the maps laid out on the nearby table.
"We can try to halt them at Fairfield if that fails we fall back a kilometer to Vacaville halting their advance there. However this is largely a gamble as we don't know really how these creatures think or how intelligent they are. If they are trying to get to the nearest source of human life they might just skip over us and head to Napa which is closer. If they follow this mechanic we might as well fall back to Vacaville as they've flanked us. This also forces us to place men on mount Baca to stop them from fully flanking Vacaville from the west." The Colonel said as he moved his fingers from Fairfield to Vacaville.
"Permission to speak freely sir." Said the Lt.
"Granted." The Colonel said calmly.
"I don't think we have enough men to cover both the mountain or the town. We also have no artillery to rain down fire on those things effectively. We have several boxes of dynamite so we could try to place them along route 80 that goes through Fairfield and Vacaville and detonate them with the detonator when a large horde enters the area. We'd at least do some damage to their ranks." Lt Patterson said.
The Colonel sighed.
"While correct if we don't hold one of these towns we would be able to stabilize the line. If we can just hold on for long enough until more reinforcement we may be able to save Sacramento from bloodshed." The Colonel said as if trying to convince himself that the best outcome was actually possible.
"Sir I think you know that that's not a possibility. Most likely the high command will order all national guard units to fall back to the Sierra mountain range." The Lt said.
"I've......been hearing rumors that this is also happening in the east coast as well." The Lt continued.
"If it is, we are going to be horrendously outstretched on all fronts. With our dodge boys (nickname for American soldiers) now in France it will take months before they arrive and I don't think the national guard on the east coast or any militia will be able to hold the ports. To be frank if the east coast is also coming under attack as rumors suggest our dodge boys might have to fight our way to use. An.....Washington might fall." The colonel said worried.
