WHAM!

Y/N was thrown to the ground by her boyfriend, a fresh bruise on her face. He had never hit her there before, but the man was so drunk that Y/N was sure that he didn't care. "David, David please!" she begged, scrambling into a corner and cowering there. "David, what did I do, please!"

"I asked you for Scotch... and you brought me the WHISKEY!" David bellowed, throwing the bottle of Scotch at her. She curled up as it hit the wall beside her, shattering and sending class shards flying, cutting her skin.

"I told you! W-We don't have any more Scotch! You drank it all!" Y/N whimpered, bringing her head up slightly to gaze at her boyfriend's expression, to see if it had softened... but it only seemed to have gotten worse.

"Then why didn't you use your brain, huh?" David yelled, stalking closer to her. "Why didn't you recognise that problem, and go out, and buy more Scotch?" he asked, leaning down and grabbing her chin roughly.

Y/N had tears streaming down her face, but she didn't resist his touch, knowing that wouldn't end well for her. "But we're hurting for money! We can't afford to buy a new bottle of Scotch whenever you run out!" She tries to reason with him, reaching her hand up to cup his cheek. "That's why I got that secretary job, remember? The one I have to get to now, or else I'll be late."

Her gentle tone had no effect on David, and he aggressively swatted her hand away. "You are not going anywhere until I get my Scotch, bitch!" He yelled, raising his arm again...

Oswald paced the floor as Edward watched him, leaning on Y/N's desk.

"And you're sure she hasn't called?" The Penguin asked, his mind racing.

Edward double-checked the phone. "Nope. No call. No note. No nothing."

"It's not like her, Y/N is never late..." Oswald sighed. As mayor, he had a duty to uphold to the city, and Y/N was a major part of that, as his secretary. Without her, he lost a lot of time trying to figure out schedules and arrange meetings.

Edward's eyes narrowed, thinking of the possibilities. But only one seemed plausible to him. Y/N's boyfriend. Both Ed and Oz knew about her tough living situation. But for some reason, she never left David, no matter how bad things got between them. "We should go to her apartment," Edward stated bluntly, adjusting his glasses.

Oswald halted his pacing abruptly and glanced at Edward, a smile creeping across his face. "You know what, you are so right!" He went over to Ed and placed a kiss on his cheek. "And this is why I love you."

Edward's face remained stoic but there was a hint of adoration in his eyes. "I love you too Oswald. Now, shall we go?"

Oswald nodded and he and Edward went to the car.

The drive was fifteen minutes to Y/N's apartment, and even though they had the address, both Ed and Oz had never been there. When they arrived, they looked the complex up and down, horror in their gaze.

It looked run-down, ratty, and rank.

"She lives here...?" Oswald asked, getting out of the car with Edward in tow. "This place is... it's terrible."

The pair entered the complex and navigated to the fifth floor, where Y/N resided, being careful to avoid touching the mouldy walls. The floorboards creaked as they stepped on them, finding Y/N's door. Apartment 15 B.

Oswald grimaced as he raised his hand to knock on the weathered door, but paused when he heard noises coming from inside.

A crash, some thumping, a blood-curdling scream.

"Y/N!" Edward shouted, pushing Oz aside and kicking down the door.

The sight nearly made the pair pass out. Y/N was huddled in the far corner of her apartment, bruised and bloody, with her boyfriend standing over her, a broken beer bottle in his hand, hitting her with it. When he heard the door crash down, David looked over and his expression darkened even more.

"GET THE HELL OUT! GET THE HELL OUTTA MY PLA-"

Y/N looked up as she felt David's blows cease. She heard the gunshot, the penetration of the bullet through the head, and the body hitting the floor.

David lay beside her, dead.

Her breathing laboured, Y/N glanced around to see who had done it. Her eyes landed on Edward and Oswald, who were rushing to her side. Oswald was shoving a gun back into its hidden holster in his jacket while Edward kneeled in front of her. "It's going to be okay, Y/N, just come with us," he said gently, helping her up.

Y/N was too tired and dazed to resist, but she didn't want to anyway. She gladly went with Oz and Ed out to their car.

Oz sat in the back with Y/N, doing his best to clean up her wounds with what he could find around the car while Edward drove them back to Oz's manor. Once there, the pair carried Y/N inside and placed her on Oz's bed.

Y/N sank into the silken sheets, instantly feeling safe. "E-Eddie? O-Ozzie?" She stammered reaching out to the Penguin.

Oz gently grabbed her hand and ran his thumb over the back of it. "It's okay, Y/N my dear. You're safe now," he promised, gently kissing her knuckles.

Edward nodded, pressing an ice pack against the bruise on her eye. She flinched at first, but then allowed it to happen. "And you'll never have to worry about that scumbag ever again."

"Y-You killed him..." Y/N murmured, still in shock as she gazed at the two men.

Oz nodded. "Yes, you're free now."

A tear rolled down her cheek, confusing the pair. Shouldn't she be happy? "I... I... wh-where will I go?" she asked. "I have nowhere to live now, the apartment is a crime scene... and it's leased under David's name. I can't go back," she explained.

The mayor's face softened at this. "My love, you can stay right here at the manor, with Eddie and I," he said, letting go of her hand and approaching the head of the bed.

Edward smiled softly, standing at the head of the bed on the opposite side. "You'll never have to fear anything again. You'll never want for anything again. We'll take good care of you, sweetheart," he assured her.

Ed and Oz leaned down, each pressing their lips to her cheek. Shivers ran down Y/N's spine as they pulled away. "Really? I can stay here with you two? For how long?"

Oz limped around the bed to where Ed was standing and wrapped his arm around the taller man's waist, leaning his head onto his shoulder. "For as long as you want."

Y/N felt a grin spread across her face. "I...I don't know what to say."

"Then don't say anything," Edward cooed.

Ed and Oz climbed into the bed with Y/N, one lying on each side of her. "We're going to protect you from now on," Oz said, wrapping his arm around her waist, being careful of her wounds as she snuggled into Edward's chest and closed her eyes. "We promise..."
