It doesn't even take an hour before we reach more trouble. Finally we are out of the tree coverage, but the sand and rock flat plains are not entirely what we were told they'd be. "Looks like we've got another problem," Clarke announces to us before relaying the statement on the radio in her grasp. From the front seat it's clear what problem we've reached. A fucking river. "Just pull up there," Clarke motions Bellamy.
He pulls over next to the flowing water. "Must be climate change," I mutter to the pair before getting out of the river. It is beautiful. Gorgeous. I want to swim in it. However the water is no doubt radiated and ultimately, it is blocking our path.
Footsteps crunch on the rocks as the King and his men hop out of their vehicle. "The ice is melting," Roan tells us. I nod in agreement, Bellamy glancing at me due to my earlier assumption. "I'll find a place to cross upstream," Roan tells us, stepping into toe as we gaze across the scene.
"I can already see a couple hundred meters ahead," I state, pointing left and ahead to where we're meant to be going. "It would take you, I don't know, a while to walk that far." It would be a waste of time, is what I'm trying to say. Clarke and Bellamy look at me, understanding somewhat where my thoughts are going. "I'll take him in the rover?"
"You can't drive," Bellamy reminds me gently. He sighs deeply at my stare. "I'll go with him," he suggests. "We won't be long." Bellamy leans down, hand on my cheek to pull me into a quick kiss. It's simple and small - formal like how my father would greet Abby after a long days work. It ignites a new familiar comfort inside my chest that reminds me we are definitely more than friends. "Eyes sharp," Bellamy instructs the guards that came with us. Be walks to the river, holding open the door in prompt for Roan to follow.
"My King," Seiku goes quickly to intercept his steps. "I should go with you," he mutters, glancing sideways at Bellamy.
"Nothing is more important than this cargo," Roan inclines his head toward the truck. "Keep it safe," he tells his man, looking back at my sister and I. Clarke's head turns to look at me. We will be alright with the Grounders and the fuel - even if the Trikru people ran all this way, it would take them over an hour to catch up.
It only takes a minute until the rover disappears upstream. A couple more minutes trickle by and we haven't heard anything from them. The river must be far longer than we can see. Three of the four Grounders that came alongside Roan have formed a small circle, distancing themselves from not only us, but Seiku. Blondie, Hunk and Beard I've called them not knowing their true names. They're whispering. Their stiff body language disturbs me slightly and I casually move Clarke and I toward the back of the truck, closer to the fuel. "(Y/n)?" Clarke worries.
I shush her, eyes looking around the vehicle. The three men are watching me - Blondie has a bow raised. I jump back behind the truck as an arrow flies past my head. Clarke exclaims. Our own guards shout. I draw my sword. The sound of a bow string, followed by the breaking of glass tells me our men who sat in the front seats are dead. I will not let Clarke be next. The other two Grounders simply have swords as weapons. When I come back around the vehicle, I'm surprised to see Seiku fighting Blondie with the bow. I stop an oncoming hit from Beard who approaches me with his sword. The terrain is shifting beneath my feet - making stances unsteady - although I manage to cut across the man's inner thigh and he limps. A guttural noise comes from my left and I see a blade through Seiku's chest, piercing his heart. The Grounder in front of me - Beard, leaning against the truck and bleeding - tsks with a confidence only found when one has the upper hand.
