Finally, the wedding day!
Sunlight streamed through the hotel window, dappling my face in a warm glow. Today was the day. The air crackled with nervous excitement, a feeling I wouldn't trade for anything. But first, coffee.
I peeked into the next room, finding Sarah sprawled across the bed, hair a delightful mess, phone clutched like a lifeline.
I was all geared up to surprise Sarah with my classic "Rise and shine, sleepyhead!"—a solid 10/10 wake-up line, if you ask me. But just as I took a step, her phone dinged with a text. Naturally, my eyes betrayed me and flicked to the screen. The name 'K' popped up, along with the cryptic message: 'Happy for them.'
Curiosity instantly sank its claws into me. K? Who's K? What are they happy about? Should I be concerned? I mean, it's not like I'm the type to snoop... okay, maybe I am snoopy adjacent, but come on! This feels suspiciously close to my business, considering today's big event includes me, Kate, and Kimmy. What are the odds that 'them' isn't us? Pretty slim, right? Right?!
Still, I tried to shake off the mini swirl of doubt. It's just a text. From someone named K. Who's cryptically happy. Totally normal, right? Deep breaths, Alexis. You're not a detective; you're a friend. A friend with no right to pry.
Determined to stick to the original plan (and ignore the gnawing in the back of my mind), I launched myself onto the bed with a dramatic bounce. "Sarah! Rise and shine! We've got a wedding to crash—uh, I mean, orchestrate!" I hollered, my enthusiasm turned up to 11. Playful energy bubbled up as I prepared to drag her into the chaos of the day, leaving the mystery of 'K' simmering on the back burner. For now.
Her reaction? She jolted upright, her eyes wide like a startled owl. "Oh my gosh, Alexis! Is it really happening?" She scrambled out of bed, a flurry of activity. "Okay, spill the tea! Did Kate manage to snag that vintage Rolls Royce she was eyeing? And did Lucy finally decide on a hairstyle that doesn't involve a whole can of hairspray?"
"Hold those damn questions for just one second," Okay, call me 'KJ' but I blurted anyway, my curiosity bubbling over like a soda shaken one too many times. "Seriously, do we have someone important—like a close friend—who should be here, knew about today, but somehow got ghosted on the invite list?"
"Hm? What do you mean, Alexis?" Sarah asked, tilting her head with the wide-eyed innocence of a toddler solving math.
Because, hello? This is a grand event. Not just any event—my wedding day! All the VIPs of my life—friends, acquaintances, connections, the occasional frenemy, and even that one cousin who always eats the cake topper before dessert—should be here.
So, I shrugged and said, "Okay, look, I didn't mean to, but I saw a name pop up on your phone—'K'—with a message that said, 'Happy for them.' Sorry, Sarah, really. I didn't mean to snoop; it just... flashed right there. And no, I didn't touch your phone, promise. I'm just curious, okay?"
I tried to sound casual, but let's be real, my tone was about as subtle as a neon sign flashing WHAT'S THE TEA?
Sarah's face? Oh, boy. Suspicious doesn't even begin to describe it. She looked like a kid caught mid-cookie heist. Like there was something she knew, something important, but she couldn't say it. Was she under oath? Secretly a spy with some classified information? Maybe she moonlights as a double agent for the League of Wedding Saboteurs?
I narrowed my eyes, channeling my inner detective, just shy of pulling out an imaginary notebook. Before I could interrogate her further, Sarah's expression suddenly shifted—like someone flipped on the 'Let's Distract Alexis' switch.
