"Blueberry or chocolate chip, honey?" my mom cooed as I sat down on an island stool, admiring the full buffet of breakfast she had spread out on the island.
She handed me a plate and a fork as I browsed the selection of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and fruit. She was in her element this week, cooking and baking for all of us. My mom was literally the best.
"Chocolate chip, please," I answered, watching her scoop a few pancakes onto my plate. "Thanks," I whispered as I helped myself to the other options.
She turned around to the fridge. "Orange juice, sweet tea...water?" she asked, looking over her shoulder.
Oh, how I missed her homemade sweet tea. "Sweet tea, please," I jingled, making her smile, grab a glass out of the cabinet, and pour me some.
Mom was already dressed for the day in some casual pants and a stylish sweater. I was still in my matching pullover and sweat set from last night because it was so cold out, even with the heat on in the house.
I loved being cozy, and Cassian kept me extra warm. We all had fun yesterday attending the town's local Christmas parade and shopping around the local shops and cafés with my friend, Violet. It was great to see her after so many months; I'd missed her. The Christmas spirit was in the air, and I loved seeing all the wreaths and lights decorating the town's light posts. My hometown was almost like something out of a Hallmark movie.
My family did the same tradition yearly, even when Truett and I were in college. We were supposed to attend our church's annual Christmas Eve service this afternoon, but I haven't even asked Cassian about it yet.
It was probably something we should discuss, but I haven't asked him about his beliefs, religion, or if he was even associated with one. After church, my mom always held a small get-together at our house with family and friends, with Christmas-themed games and food and just an all-over good time...but it wasn't going to happen this year for the first time in a long time.
My aunt and uncle on my mom's side last minute couldn't fly in because of the snowstorm that was coming our way, which resulted in their flight being canceled, so my mom didn't want them to worry about it or feel pressured. Plus, my aunts and uncles on my dad's side lived across the country, so they usually did their own thing around the holidays.
Heck, I can't even remember the last time I saw them.
My mom sat my sweet tea down in front of me as I mouthed a thank-you. She let me eat in peace as she fed our cats and refilled their water bowl. Muffin and Fluff have been our babies since I could remember. They were sisters that we'd adopted when Truett was sixteen and I was fourteen.
