Beatrice's POV
Am I being dramatic?
Is it wrong for me to feel so irrelevant in everyone else's lives?
Do I even matter?
I angrily wipe my tears as I sit on my bed and cry.
Why didn't Ma tell me about this? Why did she hide it?
And Jason...
Why am I not surprised? Is it because I know what he's capable of? On the nights he came home drunk and blacked out, he'd always murmur such strange things.
"We shouldn't.."
"What did you do?"
"Hide it."
Those are some things he'd say. However, I thought little of it at the time and didn't listen more carefully.
So this is why Bentley brought me here? I sigh and fall back on the bed.
He wants to probe me for information about Jason. But I don't know much. No one ever tells me anything.
I turn on my side and squeeze my eyes shut. Why am I always so useless? I can't free myself from Jason. I can't give Bentley what he wants. Will he even want to keep me anymore?
I frown.
Wallowing won't help your case, Bea.
I abruptly sit up.
I have to make myself useful.
First, I'll ask around the farm for information about my aunt. Her existence is a surprise to me. Why hasn't anyone spoken about her?
I leave my bedroom and go downstairs, but I freeze just as I'm about to cross the foyer when I hear voices in the living room.
Bentley.
And who's the next guy?
I tiptoe closer to the entryway and place my back against the wall.
"Are you serious about this?" The man asked.
"I am. Bea said it herself. She saw Macy's pendant in Jason's house. I was right!" Bentley urges.
The man sighs. "I told you not to use her like that."
"I didn't use her! I just asked her a few questions. You know me."
"So what? What do you want to do with this information? Go back to the cops? It's not enough."
"I'm not going back to the cops. They're useless. We have definite proof now that the Beauregards were the ones who did it."
"We don't know that fo-"
"We know, Jack. I don't get why you're so cold when I'm trying to find out what happened to Macy. I thought you'd help me if I told you."
There's a brief silence.
"Help you do what?"
Bentley takes a deep breath. "I want to sneak into Jason's house."
Jack scuffed a laugh. "Are you crazy? Do you know how many eyes are in town? How will you even get in?"
"The window. We'll go in the dead of night. Everyone is usually out then. We'll wear masks to hide our faces."
"This is horseshit. Have you seen your big ass lately? You can't fit through a window. Jason could be home, too."
"What else do you want me to do?" Bentley's voice raises higher, as if frustrated. "We need to find out what happened."
"Why is this so important to you?"
