"Come here Carter." I whispered, and picked him up once I heard him start to cry. "Are you cold?" I asked, and picked up another blanket we owned. I covered his head with the blanket, and then wrapped the rest around his body. I sat him on my lap, and pulled my knees up. His head tucked into my neck, and I rubbed his back slowly.
It had to be past midnight, and it was a fairly cold night. We lived in Delaware, and it was a night that was cold, but wasn't freezing. I had saved up plenty of money so whenever it was freezing, I could rent a motel room for me and Carter.
I still felt Carter shivering, so I unzipped my jacket, and pulled his small body into it. "I love you, Carter." I whispered, and kissed his small head. "Luhh dada." He said quietly, and I smiled.
I laid down on the pile of blankets we had at the back of an alley between two apartment complexes. I rested my head on the pillow, and kept Carter on my chest.
We stayed in a pretty narrow alley so nobody came back here. I had kept it pretty cleaned up though. I had bug killer handy, and always sprayed for Mosquitos when it was warm enough for them.
I looked up at the stars through the opening, and sighed. "We're gonna live in a mansion one day buddy. We're gonna get there." I whispered, and rubbed his back.
