With a confused face, I leaned forward to match her height as she whispered into my ear.
"Apko meri didi me itni jaldi aisa kya pasand aa gya ki apne pehli hi meeting me ha kardi, Jija jii?"
Blood rushed to my cheeks, turning them hotter in embarrassment. I looked here and there trying to come up with an answer to her question when my eyes fell on....her, smiling self. A smile so bright and wide, enough to light up a room but it was a rare sight and definitely not something that she does in front of me; Since she is always ready to attack me instead.
I chuckled to myself and held Sanvi's shoulders turning her around to make her face her sister. With my back still inclined forward I spoke.
"That smile of your sister Sanvi, how could anyone's heart not melt at that sight?"
If I had a heart capable of loving, I would find it melting at that sight too.
Sanvi kept looking at her while I found myself doing the same. She pushes her face back when laughing while her shoulders move forward. From time to time, She would slightly tilt her head to her left and cover her smile with right hand....what the-
I shook my head bringing myself back to senses and moved forward to reach my mother. Placing my hands on her shoulder from the back, I spoke.
"Maa, uh..can we go now? I have some work in the company."
She let out a gasp and turned around to slap my shoulder slightly, putting her head against her palm she spoke dramatically.
"Hey bhagwan iss ladke ko abhi bhi office jaana hai..
She then turned to Myra and held her hands before continuing.
"Myra are you sure, you want to marry him?"
I stood there shocked, Maa emphasised on the word "Him" as if Myra was doing something by marrying me. I glared at Myra when she laughed in response to my mother's question. So, all of them are already in one team?
"If Siddharth is busy, we can quickly do a Roka ceremony then he can go. What say Sonali?"
Asked Myra's mother as she walked up to us. I gave her a polite smile while slightly bowing my head. She patted my shoulders like a proud mother before speaking.
"I am really happy that you said yes."
The genuine smile of mine was replaced by a fake one as a feeling of guilt suddenly arose in my chest. Everyone looked really happy, only if they knew how shallow this happiness was, just like our "relationship". Maybe Myra was going through the same feelings as me. Our eyes met as we stood still while everyone else prepared for the Roka ceremony. I saw the same conflict in her eyes as she gazed at the smiling faces surrounding us.
"Myra, Siddharth come sit here."
Both of us were pulled and made to sit down next to eachother on the couch. I unknowingly held my breath in when our shoulders brushed slightly. With a sharp gaze, I stared at the front, This felt wrong and somehow right at the same time. My parents came forward, Maa covered Myra's head with a red embroidered veil, I remember, it was her own wedding veil.
I couldn't even gather the courage to look at Myra who was adorned in that treasured cloth. From the corner of my eyes, I could see her clenching her dress tightly. We kept sitting there and both sides of the families filled our laps with different gifts, sweets and what not?
"Chalo ji congratulations Roka ho gaya that means, You both are now connected to each other."
Announced my mother as loud claps echoed in the room. That celebration felt more like a mockery, They were talking about love and life long promises while their children sat together hiding the truth of their agreement, a deal. Our laps were filled with fake hopes while our heart drowned in guilt and concern for the future. I always take every decision with a lot of calculations, I hope my calculations don't prove to be wrong this time.
