CHAPTER ELEVEN | OUR TOWN

EDEN HAD A LOT TO CONTEND WITH TODAY. As well as it being, according to Elena, Jeremy's last day in Mystic Falls, it was also Caroline's eighteenth birthday. For as long as she could remember, Eden and Caroline celebrated each other's birthdays together every year since they were nothing but children but this year was different. Caroline had refused to celebrate her birthday because it felt pointless now she was a vampire. In her mind, celebrating eighteen was futile because she was stuck in the body of a seventeen year old for the rest of her immortal life.
Eden wandered across the hallway and back into her bedroom when she saw Bonnie perched on the end of her bed. "Wha— how did you—"
"—Jeremy let me in." Bonnie shrugged. "I wanted to come talk to you. Why didn't you stop Elena and Damon? They've taken his choice away, Eden."
"Elena told you then." A small scoff left Eden's lips as she tossed her purse onto her bed, beside Bonnie. "Do you seriously think if I knew what was going on that I'd have let this happen?" She told Bonnie with a pointed look.
"It's wrong." The Bennett girl pressed again.
"It's Elena. Her way or nothing. She literally told me I have to choose between a dead brother or an alive one, so." The Gilbert vampire simply shrugged. "I understand why she's done it, but the circumstances and the way she's gone about it are what I disagree with."
Bonnie nodded. "At least I know now why you've been avoiding Elena like the plague." She looked up as she watched a small smile form on Eden's face. "Oh! Before I forget, we're having a birthday for Caroline later. Another of Elena's ideas."
"One of her better ones, that's for sure." Eden hummed underneath her breath. "I'll come for Caroline's sake. Elena's still on my avoid list."
"Perfect."

"This is creepy." Bonnie announced with a lantern in one hand as she pushed the crypt door open with the other. Elena had led her friendship group toward Fell's crypt for the apparent funeral that they had decided to have to mourn Caroline's human life. "Even for us."
"What's your plan then, huh?" Eden shot her twin a look. It was harsher than she had originally intended. She wanted to try and be civil for the sake of Caroline, but it was hard for her. "I mean, you've gathered us here, in the cold."
"Well, Caroline was right. Technically, she's dead." The doppelgänger pointedly spoke, but immediately felt guilt when she saw Caroline's face soften. "Sorry. But, you don't need a birthday. You need a funeral."
"A funeral?" Eden asked in confusion.
"Yeah." Elena encouragingly clapped her hands together with a smile as she turned back to the blonde vampire, who had situated herself at Eden's side. "You need to say goodbye to your old life so that you can move on with your new one."
