"You might want to sit down, Jes," he suggested, and Jesper frowned.

"What are you planning?"

"Better you don't know." Jesper's frown deepened. Wylan wished he wouldn't. The curve of his lips looked much nicer when they were in a smile.

"Kaz-" Inej began warily.

"We're going to miss our opportunity. Sit down," Kaz ordered. Jesper obeyed. Out of the corner of his eye, Wylan thought he saw Kaz reaching one hand behind himself, towards Inej, as if he wanted to clasp her hand in his own.

"Hold on," Kaz whispered, and slowly, he released his foot from the pedal.

And then they were falling.

Nina

For some time now there had been a distinct rumbling noise in the distance, growing louder with each passing moment. Nina had been focused enough on her own thoughts that she had managed to tune it out, but now, it had grown to a roar, loud enough to snap her out of her reverie. She stared upwards and in the scant light of the moon she saw the silhouette of an airship, moving slowly in her direction. As it neared, the sound continued to pick up, until it seemed to rock the very earth she stood on.

Suddenly, the rumbling cut out, and the airship seemed to hang suspended in the air for a moment. Then, Nina watched in horror as it began to plummet to the ground, picking up speed as it fell. She scrambled backwards, realizing belatedly that it was hurtling directly towards the lake.

Nina reached the Summoners' pavilion at the same moment that the airship struck the surface of the lake with a resounding smack. Water launched into the air with the impact, and Nina felt a few drops scatter across her face.

As the lake settled, she crept cautiously forward. Though the airship was mostly submerged, she could see what resembled the Ravkan double eagle painted on what side. Beside it, there was a small door. Nina watched as it popped open, and a figure carefully looked out.

Even in the dark, she recognized the thin frame and long, braided hair. They made eye contact and Nina smiled as a look of surprise, then delight crossed over Inej Ghafa's face.

Inej

Inej froze as she stared into Nina's face. She had known that her friend was going to be in Os Alta for the wedding, but had by no means been expecting to see her quite this early on in her visit. For a moment, they both stared at each other in amused silence, and then, as if by an unspoken agreement, simultaneously burst into peals of laughter.

"Wraith?" Kaz's voice called out from the inside of the airship, reminding Inej of the situation at hand, as well as her rather uncomfortable position, with her upper body leaning out of the airship door and her legs folded carefully on top of a crate, for height.

Inej glanced downward and saw the rest of her crew balanced precariously among the many crates that had toppled over, some even spilling open, during their fall. "Nina's here," she called down to them.

"Of course," Wylan said, furrowing his brow. "Isn't that half the reason we came?"

"Yes," Inej sighed. "But-"

Kaz gave a sharp nod of his head. "She's out there." Inej nodded.

"Inej?" Nina's voice rose from outside the airship. She popped her head back out the door.

"Yes?"

"Do you need anything?"

Inej pursed her lips, then shook her head. Without another word, she hoisted herself the rest of the way out of the airship, until she was standing on top of it. She slid down the side, grimacing as the metal scraped across her hands, before landing in the water with a splash.
