I sat on a lawn chair in Cami's backyard a few days later. She had been nice enough to text me first, and I had jumped at the opportunity to hang out with her again. She just has the kindest and most bubbly personality that everyone seems to want to be around.
Her house turned out to be only a quick bike ride around the corner from my house, and was quite large. The house itself seemed more modern than mine, but still fit the cosy beach vibe of the rest of the neighborhood. However, she did have an entire backyard drink bar with stools and a big pool.
"Are you more of a soda girly or do you want lemonade or something?" Cami asked me as she rummaged through the outdoor fridge.
"Ooh I love lemonade, especially when it's hot out," I said, squinting up at the blazing sun from my lawn chair.
"Oh my gosh same, I have the perfect combo for you then, it'll be a surprise!" she winked, reaching in a cupboard full of syrups to her right.
I smiled, stretching my legs out in front of me. I was wearing my favorite two piece swimsuit that was a blue and white checkerboard pattern, while Cami wore a cream colored swimsuit studded with strawberries and small flowers all over. She looked so pretty with her natural highlights and sunglasses placed perfectly on her head. She slammed the cupboard door and walked over to me, two glasses in her hands filled with an almost glittery purple liquid.
"Here," she thrusted the glass out to me and watched expectantly as I took a sip. "If you don't like it then I don't know if we can be friends anymore," she smiled.
"Oh my gosh this is so good! Did you put lavender in it?" I exclaimed, taking a second sip.
"Yeah! It's like my favorite drink ever. Plus purple is the best color anyways."
"Personally I would say green is the best color, but I'll let it slide with this drink," I joked.
"Fair enough," she giggled, plopping down on the lawn chair next to me and picking up her phone from the side table. "Scooch in, I need a pic for my Instagram story to show off my new bff."
I obeyed, and moved in closer, repositioning my two dutch braids to look cute for the picture as I smiled at the camera.
"Oh my gosh we're so cute!" she squealed, posting it immediately. "I think this is even wallpaper worthy, the old one's outdated anyways since Rachel left."
My mind immediately went back to that girl in the photo from the bonfire party. "Is Rachel that pretty brunette girl on your lock screen? The one with the blue eyes?" I asked quickly, knowing it was probably my only chance to figure it out.
"Oh yeah, I probably should've mentioned it more," she conceded. "Rachel and Jacob dated for like two years, but they just broke up a few months ago. It was pretty hard on the both of them, and Rachel stopped hanging out with the group. Although I do see her still sometimes."
"Really? I can't believe Jacob is so... so..."
"So put together for someone who just got out of a two year relationship?" she finished for me. "Me neither, but I think that it had been a long time coming," she offered.
I took another sip of my lavender lemonade, thinking it over. "Do you think he wants to get back together with her?" I asked, trying as hard as possible not to seem nosy.
"I don't know, I think he kind of has eyes for someone else now," she winked at me and I tried not to blush hard.
"What about you though?"
"Me and Jacob?" she blinked her eyes in amazement. "Um, no babe. He's like my second brother or something, we've known each other since we were little kids. Besides, I am definitely loving the single life, who needs boys anyways?"
I laughed trying not to spill my drink everywhere. "You are so real for that."
"Maybe, maybe not," she shrugged sarcastically. "But what I do know is that I am being roasted alive right now. You wanna take a dip in the pool?"
"You are such a mind reader!" I smiled, getting up from my seat.
We jumped in the water at the same time, making a big splash that woke up Cami's little Labrador who was sunbathing on the poolside. We swam around for a while before we decided that we felt like wrinkled raisins and went inside her house to get out of our swim suits.
I hadn't brought a change of clothes, but Cami told me she had lots and didn't mind me borrowing hers. She gave me a pair of jean shorts to wear and an oversized pastel green tee, courtesy of my favorite color.
The rest of the afternoon we spent curled up on the couch watching hours worth of Gilmore Girls, which Cami promised I would love, and she wasn't wrong. Dustin even came in and watched an episode with us at some point which totally surprised me. Although he wasn't too interested once he realized his favorite character wasn't in the episode.
Cami even showed me how to work her family's industrial popcorn machine. It looked like those big ones you see at the movie theater or a carnival, but tasted even better.
When it was time for me to head home, I felt a wave of disappointment wash over me. I hadn't had fun like this in so long, and in a way Cami reminded me of Carly whom I deeply missed. Still, Cami made sure to let me know that she totally wanted to hang out again with me soon, making me smile once more.
"Thank you so much for having me over," I said. "I really needed a change, it was... nice."
"Of course! I'm so glad you were able to hang out! See you around August!" she exclaimed, waving me off as I hopped back onto my bike.
"See you around!" I shouted back, riding off into the distance with a newfound happiness in my heart.
