The Avengers were lounging about in the common areas when Nick Fury enters. "We're going on a field trip," Fury states with absolutely no context.
"And where exactly are we going?" Tony asks as he nurses a cup of coffee.
"I have decided your teamwork has been lacking lately. So I have contacted someone that will also participate in this team building exercise. Be ready in 20, they are already expecting us." Everyone looked at each other confused. Since when were team building exercises a mandatory thing now?
"You know anything about this?" Steve asks Natasha.
"Nope," she shakes her head, "this is all news to me. Wonder what he has up his sleeve."
"Whatever it is I don't trust it," Tony speaks up. "Why all the secrecy? And who the hell agreed with eyepatch that this is a good idea?"
"Must be important if he decided to give us the news himself," Clint points out.
"He's got a point," Bruce agrees.
"Still don't trust it. I'm going to find out what he's up to." Tony struts to his lab to do his own investigating. The rest of the Avengers weren't so sure about Tony's snooping. Sometimes it gets them more in trouble than anything else.
Fury arrived at the tower earlier to make sure everyone was going to participate in the "teamwork exercise". Fury still hadn't told them where exactly they were going. "When we get there everyone must be on their best behavior," he warns. "I don't want to leave a bad impression. These people might not be the most welcoming to outsiders."
"And where exactly are we going?" Tony asks.
"I'm glad you asked. All of you are going to mentor a child at Xavier's School for Youngsters." Something struck a chord in Tony. He never thought he would step foot in that place again. There were many reasons for that but to be honest there's one specifically. "Is there a problem, Stark?"
"No problem at all," Tony tries to play off. Many cause see that whatever it is Tony was extremely uncomfortable when it comes to the location. Maybe he knew someone there. No one, except Fury, could say what made him so antsy. Fury already knew the real reason why he was avoiding the matter. If Fury told him beforehand he wouldn't even have gotten into the van.
They arrive to what appeared to be a mansion. "This is a school?" Sam asks in confusion and awe.
"The Xavier family home was converted into a school by a Professor Charles Xavier," Fury explains. Bruce perks up in recognition.
"I read some of his scientific journals on genetics," Bruce admits. "However, I don't understand why we're here."
"After having multiple discussions with Professor Xavier we come to an agreement. Each of you will be separated into groups of two, the groups will be paired with a teacher at the school, then all of you will mentor one student, and at certain points in time there will be an exercise. You will not know what it is until the day of. The point is that this is to make you all work together in different circumstances. The good news is that I'm not picking the groups." Fury had a smug smile on his face. No one can complain about him purposely putting people together. They don't know how Xavier operates. At the end of the day they could just about pull their hair out or kill one another.
