"the way you move is like a full on rainstorm
and im a house of cards
you're the kind of reckless that should send me running but i
kinda hope that i wont get far"

Courtney usually hated New Years parties.

They were always excuses for people to get drunk and do whatever they wanted. She had to give it to them though: it was the last day of the year. People want to let loose.

"Come on, it'll be fun," Bridgette said as they walked on the city pavement to the apartment complex where the party was. All their friends from college were gonna be there, every single one of them. Courtney didn't know what was scarier: drunk college students or the art of socializing itself.

Bridgette looked stunning tonight. She had a gorgeous blue sequin skirt and a white tank top, and a huge fluffy white coat paired with black heels. Her makeup was done in shimmery aqua and her hair was straightened and fell over her shoulders in long blonde locks.

"It's the last day of the whole year, and we have snowfall," Bridgette said, "you could try to be bit happy about this." She nudged Courtney in the ribs lightly. "You've been studying so hard all year, you deserve a break."

"I don't know, I don't hate parties," Courtney replied. "But I hate the concept of sticky gross college students in the heat of a cramped building with too much alcohol. And almost every time you and Heather get too drunk and Noah and I have to lug you two into the backseat of the Uber."

"It's okay if I get drunk this time," Bridgette said merrily as she shivered. Snow fell around them and they sped up to get into a warm building. "It's at Geoff's. Is Noah coming tonight?"

"Yeah, but likely what will happen is he will sit in a corner with a book and avoid the world. I don't know. Gwen forced him." The two laughed as they reached the apartments and hit the button to the fifteenth floor.

Bridgette knocked on the door and Geoff opened it. He was in his usual get together of an outfit- pink button up, hat and shorts. His hair was already messy and a bit sweaty, which made Courtney almost take a step back. Maybe she shouldn't have washed her hair the night before.

"Hey girls!" Geoff said happily. "Come on in!" Immediately he seized Bridgette by the waist, earning a squeal from her, and whisked her into the mess of the New Years party.

Courtney stepped in. The air hit her, warm and heated. It was maybe the heater pumping warm air for the cold weather outside. She scanned the room: Gwen and Trent were brewing up a drink at the kitchen island, Noah was sitting on the couch reading a book harmlessly and Tyler and Lindsay were standing in a corner talking and drinking from the cliche red cups.

For thirty minutes she stood here awkwardly and talked to people who passed by and greeted her- mainly Heather and Leshawna but they were already a bit tipsy. She stood by the door, arms crossed. God, she looked pathetic.

She thought about approaching Gwen, but she looked very occupied as she was in a headlock by Justin and Trent was feeding her a beer bottle. Courtney looked at Noah and saw he was cuddling with Cody, a surprising pairing, and decided to give them privacy. Heather and Alejandro had stopped denying their love for each other and were viciously making out.

"What are you doing here, princess?" a boy said. He had bright neon green hair and was wearing a t-shirt with a skull on it and a white longsleeve shirt underneath. Courtney looked him up and down. It was Duncan. She saw him often at uni, but never in any classes. Always outside on his phone. To her surprise, he didn't appear to be drunk.
