"Marié Charlotte Badeaux!" Céline shrieked, glaring at her daughter who stood in the living room doorway worried what her mother would do next.
"Merde!" Marié cursed lowly to herself, Céline's glare deepening and intensifying.
"What have you done to your hair!" Céline exclaimed, eyes lingering where Marié dark locks once were with sadness as if she was mourning the loss of a loved one.
Marié's uncle attempted to sneak away from the scene, hoping Céline wouldn't catch him and question him.
"Claude!" Céline loudly called out before her brother-in-law could sneak away. Claude stopped in his tracks, cursing to himself that he couldn't get away fast enough. Céline stomped over to him before continuing, motioning over to where Mariè stood. "How could you let my daughter cut her hair?!"
Claude kept a straight calm face, not wanting Céline to know that he already knew. She'd have his head for it. "I learned she cut her hair at the same time you did, Céline"
Céline looked back at Mariè who stood with slight fear in her eyes for what her mother might do next. Céline roams her eyes over her daughter's new haircut. Suddenly, Mariè watches as her mother begins to slowly lose her balance and her vision drifting away. "I feel faint. . ."
Céline suddenly dropped, Claude quickly catching her and setting her on the nearest sofa chair. "Mother!" Mariè exclaimed worriedly.
Mairè stepped closer to her mother's figure, watching as she settled into the chair and calmed down. Céline looked up at her daughter in pure disappointment and Mariè waited for her mother to finally explode.
"I can't believe you'd do this to yourself, to me! Your hair was so beautiful, Marié. It was more than beautiful, it was perfect!" Céline exclaimed, jabbing her manicured finger at her own chest. She paused before speaking again. "Why would you do such a thing?"
"I didn't like it long anymore, mother. I wanted a change —" Mariè tried to explain but her mother cut her off before she could get out another word.
"A change?! If you want a change then change how you dress, how you style your hair, or even put on a little makeup! But sensible people don't just cut all their hair off!" Céline scowled, giving her daughter a once-over that made Mariè choke up. Céline then frowns at her daughter and shakes her head disapprovingly. "I'm so disappointed in you"
Mariè's eyes widened and even Claude stared down at his sister-in-law, a look of disbelief. Her heart broke in that moment, her mother had never spoken like that before to her. She'd never even raised her voice at her, her father had certainly never raised his voice either.
They were both calm parents but she guessed that more than a couple of things changed when her father died.
Frustrated tears began to gather in her eyes but she refused to let them go. Her fists clenched at her sides and her face turned red. "Mother, please!"
Céline put her hand up at her daughter to be quiet. "I don't want to discuss this anymore, Marié. Go to your room, right now. You aren't allowed to leave this house until I say you can, I'm infuriated with you" Céline spoke, giving her daughter one last look of disgust before turning her head away from her as her eyes caught sight of the missing long locks of hair once more. "God, I can't even look at you right now"
Mariè gaped at her mother, at a loss for words. The young girl didn't even get a moment to say a simple 'hello' to her mother or even get a hug after almost five years. She never got to study how much her mother had aged since she last saw her and remarked on how beautiful she still looked. They didn't get to catch up on all the things they missed without each other like the old times.
