I glanced at Carlisle as Aro turned back to his guard. Carlisle was staring at Aro with a slightly frustrated look on his face.
"Aro, you see there's no law broken here."
Aro glanced at him dismissively, then turned back to his guard who looked anxious.
"Agreed, Carlisle. But does it then follow that there is no danger? For the first time in our history humans pose a threat to our kind. Their modern technology has given birth to weapons that could destroy us. Maintaining our secret has never been more imperative. In such perilous times, only the known is safe. Only the known is tolerable. And we know nothing ofwhat this child will become. Can we live with such uncertainty? Spare ourselves a fight today, only to die tomorrow."
Just then two figures emerged and I heard the footsteps as they walked onto the snow. I looked over and gasped as I saw Alice and Jasper walking across the clearing and towards Aro. Alice and Jasper spared us one look before looking ahead.
"Alice." Bella breathed and there was a murmur through both groups of witnesses.
"Alice!" Aro exclaimed excitedly.
As Alice and Jasper walked up to Aro, Demetri and Felix stopped them.
"My dear, dear Alice, we're so glad to see you here, after all."
Alice held her hand towards Aro, past Demetri and Felix who held her back.
"I have evidence the child won't be a risk to our kind. Let me show you."
Aro eyed her for half a second before nodding and Demetri and Felix let her go. I tensed angrily as Felix slapped Jasper in the face.
Alice walked to Aro and extended her hand to him. He took it and his eyes went wide.
I watched in shock as Alice snatched her hand away from Aro. "It doesn't matter what I show you. Even when you see, you still won't change your decision."
Alice glanced back towards us and at Bella. "Now." She whispered and I winced. It was going to come to a fight after all.
Bella turned to Alexia, Jacob and Katerina and clutched her daughter's hand. "Take care of my daughter."
Edward looked pained as he stared at his family. I looked sadly at them before turning sharply to see Alice kick Aro. He flew through the air and landed, hauling himself up.
"Take her away!" Aro yelled and I stepped forward angrily as two guards snatched Alice and held her back.
"Let her go!" Carlisle yelled, rushing across the snowy clearing. I watched in worry as he fought off two guards, all the while Aro rushed towards him. The two of them jumped into the air and collided. I felt something inside of me snap as they fell to the ground. It wasn't until I saw Carlisle's head in Aro's hand that I realized what had snapped. The mating bond. Carlisle was dead.
I didn't fall to the ground, didn't cry. I didn't even give myself time to react to the pain coursing through me as I propelled myself forward, right towards Aro. Aro lifted his hands and his guard ran towards our witnesses and we all collided and began to fight.
I took out two vampires swiftly, feeling numb to the fact that I'd just killed two people. I couldn't feel anything as I plowed through any vampire that came my way. I felt a surge of pain and turned to see Jasper being held down by Felix. I felt anger rise as I saw Jane's eyes on him. Without thinking, I rushed towards her. She didn't have enough time to glance my way as I tackled her.
I screamed as she jumped up and glared at me and I felt the worse pain I'd ever felt. But just as soon as it came, it left. I stood up and turned back to see Bella shielding me. I grinned and turned back to Jane, who now looked scared. Jasper ran up behind her and she whirled, looking utterly terrified. In one moment, his hand was on her neck.
