I spent the next few days meeting the vampires that Carlisle knew. I met Garrett, a nomad who Carlisle had met during the 18th century. Garrett was a tall vampire with long brown hair and ruby eyes. He seemed to be an adventurer and he fell in quickly with the Denali sisters. I sensed he felt a certain pull to Kate and I wondered if she felt it too from the way she flirted with him. Alex also spent a lot of time with Eleazar and Carmen and I believed she felt a sense of obligation towards Eleazar since he'd saved her life all those years ago.
Mary and Randall also came- friends already, though they did not travel together. They listened to Alexia's story and stayed to witness like the others. They also wondered what they would do if the Volturi did not pause for explanations. I knew that each of the vampires toyed with the idea of standing with us.
The wolves became more angry with each addition, especially since only the Denali sisters shared our hunting preferences. Thankfully, the vampires who thirsted for human blood agreed not to hunt in Fork's town limits. I knew that this also made my father uncomfortable, since he was a cop through and through. He put up with it however and was civil to the vampires for Alexia's sake.
I'd been home for only three days when two unexpected friends arrived-unexpected because neither Rose or Carlisle had been able to contact the Amazon vampires.
The two vampires were very tall and seemed to appear as if they'd been stretched- long arms and legs, long fingers, long black braids, and long faces with long noses. They wore nothing but animal skins, hides and vests. It wasn't just their eccentric clothing that made them seem wild but everything about them, from their restless crimson eyes to their sudden, darting movements. But Alice had sent them, which was shocking news to everyone.
Why had Alice been in South America? I figured she may have seen that none of us had been able to get in touch with the Amazons, but I also felt that Alice had a different motive for being in South America.
"Carlisle." One of the Amazon vampires greeted and Carlisle and I had walked over to greet them.
"Zafrina and Senna. But where's Kachiri? I've never seen you three apart."
"Alice told us we needed to separate. It's uncomfortable to be away from each other, but Alice assured us that you needed us here, while she very much needed Kachiri somewhere else. That's all she would tell us, except that there was a great hurry."
Bella brought out Alexia to meet the two vampires and they listened very calmly to the story, and even allowed Alexia to prove it by her gift. They seemed just as enchanted by Alexia as the other vampires did and I knew we'd gained two more witnesses.
Zafrina had a gift, a very intriguing one. I had listened to Edward explain the gift to Bella, who as usual, was not affected by it.
"It's a very straightforward illusion. She can make most people see whatever she wants them to see- see that and nothing else."
As Edward spoke, I gasped. The forest around me had transformed into a beautiful rainforest and I nearly believed it was real, but I felt Carlisle's hand in mine.
"Impressive." I stated as the forest returned to me and Zafrina smiled.
"I don't see anything." Bella stated.
"Edward, you didn't tell me your wife is a shield." Eleazar stated as he walked over to us. Alex, who was at his side, looked smiled at him.
"I beat you to it in telling her about her gift, Eleazar, seeing as it's so similar to my mother's and my own."
"Sometimes I forget that we're facing off against your mother." Dad stated, gazing at Alex.
She shrugged, but I could feel she was conflicted about facing her mother again.
