Chapter 18

•Alex's P.O.V•

I've faced a lot in tle past semester; assassination atempts, cryptic scrolls foreshadowing my demise and an elemental keen on destroying me and taking over the entire realm with a single touch. For a normal elemental, instances like those are be beyond terrifying to even imagine.

But I've never been more scared than I was in Grandpa's office.

Coach Beast stood next to Grandpa, his arms crossed. He stared at me with half lidded eyes and furrowed brows, completely silent. Mr Ellowin was also there, sitting on grandpa's left.

"I hope you know why we called you here, Alex." Grandpa sighed.

"Before you say anything, I can explain-"

"Quiet."

Coach Beast spoke in a low, haunting growl. His eyes never left me. His glare felt like it was burning a hole into my soul. My body tensed. My heart was racing, beating so hard I was sure grandpa could hear it thudding against my chest. I turned my gaze back to the other two men in the room, my forehead glistening in sweat.

"One of the gargoyles informed me that he saw a figure moving out of the dorms and into the main school building in the early hours of the morning." Mr Ellowin said, breaking the tension ever so slightly.

"Room A10 to be specific." Grandpa added, his expression emotionless.

"Yes. Amaru woke me up to inform me that someone snuck into the Beast Sanctuary and demanded to know who the culprit was immediately."

My eyes glanced at the coach seething in the corner. His eyes were still fixed on me, glowing ever so slightly. I was certain that I could hear him growling under his breath too. I gulped.

"It's only been a month and you're already in trouble." Grandpa murmured, rubbing his eyes.

"I had a good reason to-"

The ground rumbled, cutting me off. I didn't even notice Coach Beast moving until my feet were off the ground. He gripped my jacket with one hand, bringing his face closer to mine with a furious snarl on his face. His other hand morphed, growing fur and long claws.

"You don't get to speak after what you've done!" He roared, his voice even deeper than it was a second ago. His eyes glowed brightly.

"Amaru." Grandpa stood up. "Let him go."

Coach Beast turned back to the headmaster, a guttural growl leaving his lips. Grandpa shot him a glare, his own eyes glowing.

"Now."

Coach beast hesitated before letting out a breath. He closed his eyes, his hand morphing back to its normal state, and dropped me back into the chair. He went back to his post next to my grandfather.

"As I was saying." Mr Ellowin continued. "It's bad enough for students to be outside their dorms past curfew, but for you to wander the school under the cover of night and sneak into an restricted area is ten times worse."

"You better have a good reason for doing it, kiddo." Grandpa muttered.

It was only after the room had gone silent that I noticed how quickly I was breathing, as well as the single tear that had fallen down my cheek seconds before. I gripped onto my shirt tightly and tried to steady my breathing. Almost a minute later, I was easy to speak.

"I found something."

"Like what?" Coach Beast snarled.

I let out a quick breath and summoned a small ball of flame in my outstretched hand. From it, emerged the brown gem I found in the sanctuary.
