shifts at the beach were always her favorites, especially when it wasn't busy and there wasn't much to do except for sitting on top of the watch tower and pretending to read a book as a ploy so she could watch sunwoo train the newbies in his cute red shorts.
it was calm and the sun was warm on her skin, the small breeze blowing the strands of her ponytail lightly. she was relaxed and in her happy place.
that was, of course, until a certain brown head of hair nearly scared the soul out of her.
"i'm curious," haechan voiced from beside her, not reacting to the way subin had nearly fallen over in fear. "you seem pretty confident in everything but whenever sunwoos around you go hermit.... got a crush?" he quirked a brow at her, turning to look from where she had been previously to look at her.
"where the hell did you come from?" how had she not heard or seen him come up the ladder of the watch tower and how did he even know where to find her?
he only chuckled, reaching his hand out to help her back up onto her chair. "well i was getting my tan on but then i saw you pathetically trying to stare at one of my best friends while acting like you were reading a book which is upside down by the way." he pointed towards the random book she had in her hands, amusement laced in his tone.
she was quick to turn it right side up with wide eyes, sighing harshly when she realized there was no point and slamming it shut. "you're not supposed to be up here." technically it didn't really matter, but she didn't want him up there with her so of course she was gonna say anything to get him to go away so she could continue babe watch.
"i can help you out, you know. he is my best friend anyways," haechan shrugged, ignoring her previous words. "based on the way he seemed to hardly know you at the party albeit working with you the babe watch isn't really working in your favor." he snorted, leaning back in the beach chair next to her.
"i don't need help. he was probably drunk that night and also it was dark, honest mistake." she scoffed, adjusting her sunglasses that gleamed in the sunlight.
haechan gave her an unamused look, tilting his head. "im like 90 percent sure he was almost completely sober when we joined you guys." he hummed, earning an eye roll from the girl.
"and i'm 90 percent not interested in getting help from someone like you, thanks," she sighed, throwing her book to the side and picking up her fruity drink that was definitely watered down. "i'm completely fine with babe watching." she quipped.
"but how are you gonna win the game if you don't shoot your shot?" god this guy was just not gonna give up. subin didn't even know why he was attempting this, they hardly knew each other let alone were able to stand each other for more than five minutes when they did happen to be in the same vicinity.
"have you considered the idea that i want to be benched and just watch the game instead of actually playing it?" she raised a brow behind her sunglasses, sipping from her straw.
"oh come on. everyone wants to be put in the game at least once. it's kinda sad to see someone so enamored, sitting on the bench instead of shooting their shot." he argued, folding his arms over his chest.
haechan was a pretty guy. he was undoubtedly attractive and had the type of cool and fun personality that a lot of people were attracted to naturally. he was loud and funny and his fans loved his voice which was admittedly one of the prettiest subin had ever heard.
but god did he annoy subin sometimes. they rarely interacted but when they did it was hard for her to keep up. he had such a friendly and comfortable personality and subin did not. well at least not right off the bat.
he was easily able to initiate a conversation like this while hardly knowing whenever he was talking to and it annoyed the shit out of her because how was he, someone she hardly knew, gonna tell her what to and to not do?
"enough with the basketball talk," she groaned. "we aren't even close like that, so my answer is no. even if we were it'd still be no because it wouldn't work anyways, this is strictly a delusionship phase i'll be over in a few months." she sighed, leaning down to place her drink beside her feet.
"honey, i know a prude when i see one. you probably haven't been laid in ages and yet you're sitting here wasting your youth gawking at some airhead football player who peaked in high school." haechan deadpanned.
"isn't he your best friend?" she questioned, earning a goofy smile from the older. "and i'm not a prude!" she groaned, throwing her head backwards in irritation.
"my airhead football player best friend who peaked in high school," he hummed, turning to look back down at the beach where sunwoo was huddled up with all the trainees. "he's not unattainable, you know. if you tried hard enough you could win him over." he said as if it was an easy task he was talking about.
subin really would've agreed with him if she didn't already know a lot of things from her friends who went to school with him.
like how he's one of the best football players, or that he's actually really good in school- super smart although he seemed like an airhead outside of school. and his family is one of the families in the sacred ten so he was like, loaded.
not to mention he was a total babe and nearly everyone wanted him, boys and girls. he was just one of those people who were so high up in the pyramid of young hierarchy that the idea of being able to catch their eye seemed so delusional that she wanted to kick herself for even looking his way in the first place.
"and i mean you're not exactly ugly so that's a bonus," the older joked, laughing when he caught wind of her expression of irritation. "joking. sort of. anyways, the point is that you're putting him too far out for you to reach. let me help you out." he nudged her arm.
and subin had never been more embarrassed in her life to be honest. because not only was her best friends brother offering her help, but her crushes best friend was offering her help. it was that obvious.
"my answer is still no, haechan. i like the freedom of babe watching from a far in peace. so if you'll excuse me id like to go back to that." she huffed, picking her book back up and making sure it was the right side up this time.
there was a beat of silence and although subin wasn't looking directly at the boy, she knew he was still sitting there. rolling her eyes and snapping her head in his direction, she glared through the lenses of her sunglasses. "that means leave, dude." she quipped, nodding her head to the front of the watch tower where the ladder was.
haechan held his hands up in defense as he stood up. "got it, got it. i just got distracted by your boyfriend over there flirting with kim yungmi," he hummed, turning on his heel. "anyways, i guess ill be on my way." he shrugged, making his first few steps down the latter.
and subin couldn't believe the way her mouth betrayed her because before he could even take another step down she was calling out his name, stopping him in his tracks. "hypothetically speaking, how would you hook me up?" and the mischievous smirk plastered on his face was enough to make her immediately regret all of her decisions.
for the plot, i guess.
ah yes, the let me help you with your crush on my bff trope
