Prologue
I'm done for. Dead. No amount of training could ever prepare me for the situation I'm in now. The demons are surrounding me with their glistening black eyes that render me immobile and hold me captive. I can't breath, I can't speak, not even as they raise the fog pooled around my ankles until I'm completely trapped within the tendrils. This can't be happening, or should I say, I can't let it end this way. I strain against the bloodied bonds around my wrist and feet even as I struggle to breath. My lungs begin to ache with the effort of taking in oxygen, sending small waves of pain in my chest. My vision swims as I try to anchor myself through the labored breathing. And then its gone. The air that was there dissipates and leaves me like a fish out of water. I become frantic and my eyes rove desperately for any last escape until they settle on a set of piercing violet eyes. They cut through the haze with a look of pure steel. The eyes lock with mine and i'm rocked to my very core. I cant seem to look away but darkness swirls at the edges of my vision. I find myself wondering about those eyes even as a fall head first into the blackness.
Chapter One
~Lucas's POV~
Silence echoes throuhout the city and you can almost imagine it as it was before the rupture. Almost. But silence doesn't change the crumbling of once majestic buildings nor does it hide the smell of decay. Everywhere i look i can see evidence of destruction left behin, the look of an almost completly deserted city. One can even see it in the nicer areas that we are patrolling.
"Hey Lucas!" marc called out from behind. I shot a questioning look over my shoulder. I found Marc and Ralk peering off into the distance while Ralk fidgeted with the gun in his hand.
"What is it?" I questioned, still puzzled at why they were both action so strange. They were known to play around but I didnt think they were joking this time. I had rarely seen the two look so grave. Marc turned slowly and I found utter despair etched into his expression.
"Look closer." His voice cracking audibly. now they were starting to unnerve me, not an easy task since i generally kept my emotions to a minimum. It was a good way to avoid being slaughtered out here. I glanced at the brothers once more then raked my eyes over the area. I froze. Only a couple of blocks away I could see wisps of tar black fog spilling out of an alley. The tendrils curled and hissed when they touched the puddles of stagnant water on the pavement. That fog could really only mean one thing. Demons. That smoke only appeared as they cornered their next meal, putting the victim in a state where they couldn't fight back. Just the thought of the fog brought up unwanted memories before I could force them back down again. I gritted my teeth against the onslaught of pain and sorrow before casting all caution to the wind and breaking out into a run. I heard the cries of my team as they told me to stay away - to just turn back.
"It's not worth it Lucas! The humans already gone!!"
"It's dangerous!"
"You're going to get yourself killed!"
Their voices fell on deaf ears as my feet pounded the rough cement beneath me. I might not save the human trapped in fog, but I'll be damned if I let the demons live afterwards. No, those spiteful creatures deserved to die. They took away everyone and everything I held dear right before my very eyes when I could do nothing but watch. With these thoughts in mind I ran faster, my blood pumping through my veins as I moved in perfect rhythm. I stopped abruptly as I reached the alley's entrance and prepared myself for whatever lurked beyond my sight. Carefully, I unsheathed Guardia then I pivoted to face the alleyway.
Only to be shocked into immobility. There, in a cocoon of swirling black fog, was a beautiful women with auburn hair that fell in waves. It cascaded down her shoulders and complimented her delicate features. Her pale green eyes looked panicked as she struggled desperately against the demons hold. Her eyes found mine and I became entranced. What I saw within her eyes showed the raw depths of her soul and the reflection of my own. I watched as she crumbled into a heap on the ground; her eyes staying locked with mine until she could no longer keep them open. That's what finally broke the spell she pit me under.
I took in the demons that surrounded her. There were three of them and they all were covered with the dark jewels of their demon form. They had noticed my presence and I had captured their attention. I smiled savagely at the trio before I charged, filled with a furious wrath as I swung Guardia. Again and again I sliced with my sword, letting my rage flow passionately with each swing. I fought them until there was nothing left of the demons but the darkest smoke and fresh blood upon the walls.
