New Life (Chapter 6)
The night air was cold and biting as I crossed the border, leaving behind everything I had ever known. The pain in my chest was still there, a constant reminder of the bond that had been shattered. But with each step, I also felt a strange sense of freedom, as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
I didn't know where I was going, but I knew I couldn't stay. The pack, my friends, my mate—none of it mattered anymore. I needed to find a place where I could start over, where I could be free from the pain and the memories.
Walking through the forest, the sounds of the night surrounded me. The rustling of leaves, the distant call of an owl, the crunch of twigs under my feet. It was almost peaceful, in a way. I let Kai take control, allowing him to guide us through the darkness of no man's land.
Running nonstop not sure where I am or where I'm heading, just running forward. After almost 2 straight days of running, some good karma finally comes around as my eyes fall on a small clearing. In the center was a cabin, old and weathered but still standing. It looked abandoned, but it was shelter, and that was all I needed right now.
I pushed open the door, the hinges creaking in protest. Inside, the cabin was sparse but clean. A small bed in the corner, a table and chair, and a fireplace with a stack of wood beside it. I collapsed onto the bed, exhaustion finally catching up with me.
As I lay there, staring up at the ceiling, I couldn't help but think about everything that had happened. The rejection, the fight with Taylor, the decision to leave. It all felt like a bad dream, one that I couldn't wake up from.
But as the first light of dawn began to filter through the windows, I realized that this was my reality now. I was a rogue, alone and without a pack. But maybe, just maybe, that was exactly what I needed. As I drift to sleep with that final hopeful thought.
1 Year Later
Lunging out from behind teeth gnashing together around the rabbit, it shakes for a second then goes limp. Taking a whiff to try and figure out how far I'd run from the cabin, my blood runs cold. "Crap, I didn't realize I ran onto pack territory!" Turning to leave.
"I tried to tell you, but you were thinking with your stomach."
"HEY! You are just as hungry as..."
Suddenly feeling vibrations, I drop to the ground. Just as 5 rouges ran past.
Staying low, waiting for them to move on, I hear a small cry, and just before they are completely out of sight, looking up, I make eye contact with a pup being carried in one of the rouges mouths. Without any hesitation or control over my body, I run after them.
I sprinted after the rogues, my heart pounding in my chest. The sight of the pup in their grasp fueled my determination. I couldn't let them harm an innocent child. Kai growled in agreement, pushing me to run faster.
The rogues were fast, but I was faster. I closed the distance between us, my eyes locked on the pup. As I got closer, I could see the fear in its eyes, and it broke my heart. I had to save it.
With a burst of speed, I lunged at the rogue carrying the pup, knocking him to the ground. The pup tumbled out of his grasp, and I quickly scooped it up in my mouth.
The other rogues turned to face me, their eyes filled with anger. "You shouldn't have done that," one of them snarled, stepping forward.
I bared my teeth, ready to fight. "You're not taking this pup, You Fucker," I growled, my voice low and dangerous.
The rogues circled me, their eyes glinting with malice. I knew I was outnumbered.
But when has that ever been a problem?
With a deep breath, I prepared myself for the fight. Kai was ready, his growls echoing in my mind. As I dropped the pup, the first rogue lunged at me, but I sidestepped and swiped at him with my claws, leaving deep gashes across his side. He yelled and fell back, giving me a moment to focus on the others.
The second rogue came at me from the left, but I was ready. I dove under his attack and slammed into him with my shoulder, sending him sprawling to the ground. The third and fourth rogues attacked together, but their coordination was sloppy. I managed to dodge their blows and counter with swift and fatal strikes of my own.
The fifth rogue, the largest of the group, snarled and charged at me. I braced myself, knowing this would be the toughest fight. We clashed in a flurry of teeth and claws, each trying to gain the upper hand. He was strong, but I was faster. I managed to get a hold of his neck and bit down hard, feeling the satisfying crunch of bone.
The rogue went limp, and I let him drop to the ground as I slowly licked my lips. The others, seeing their leader defeated, hesitated. I took the opportunity to growl menacingly, daring them to come at me again. They exchanged nervous glances before turning tail and running back into the forest.
Panting, I looked down at the pup, who was trembling but unharmed. I gently picked it up and started to make my way back to the cabin. As I walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. I had protected the pup and driven off the rogues.
When I reached the cabin, I set the pup down and checked it for injuries. It seemed fine, just scared. I gave it a reassuring nuzzle before settling down on the bed beside it. As I shifted back and put on some boxers, the adrenaline began to wear off, and I felt the exhaustion creeping back in. But this time, it was a good kind of tired—the kind that comes from knowing you've done something right.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what I was going to do with this pup. I was still a rogue. With so many other questions and worries filling my head, I look over at the pup, fast asleep. My mind instantly puts at ease as my concision fades.
